We've known about a new LOTR game in the works for quite a few months now, but no details have been released... until now!

Pandemic Studios, an EA subsidiary and makers of the popular Star Wars Battlefront Series, have announced that for the last 2 or so years, they've been working on Lord of the Rings: Conquest!

Official Announcement:

Conquest will let players take control of many of the characters and creatures from the series and pit them on any of the franchise's famous battlefields. From Cave-trolls to Oliphaunts to the Balrog and even Sauron, practically the entire universe will be available for battle with up to 150 characters on-screen at any one time.

The Lord of the Rings: Conquest is set for release in the fall of 2008 and will hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Interview plus screens

We've got Helm's Deep, Pelennor Fields, Minas Tirith, The Black Gates, and then we've got a bunch of other cool stuff like the Mines of Moria. Weathertop, The Shire. We've got a whole level where you get to play as the evil guys, running through The Shire, trampling Hobbits and burning the place to the ground.

You get to play as a Troll and when you play as the Trolls in the game, you can pick up enemy units and kill them and then walk around with them while you're swinging your club. Whenever you want, you can throw them and they're all physics-based, so you can throw them into enemy units and they'll knock the enemy units out like bowling pins.

we have the Campaign Mode -- we have two full campaigns on either side. The good campaign pretty much faithfully follows the events of the films, but again with the systematic gameplay that allows you to play up the battles any way you choose. The evil campaign is unlocked afterwards, and that's kind of a "what-if" scenario that assumes that Frodo failed in destroying the Ring. They hint at, both in the books and the films, that it would be very bad if Frodo were to fail, but they never really go into detail about exactly how Sauron would go about conquering Middle-Earth.

Yes, the rumours all along have been a Battlefront version of LOTR. Personally, this looks exactly what I wanted, which was a hugely expanded version of ROTWK (the hero based RPG).

What I find cool is that they're purposely taking enough freedom accuracy-wise to make a good game with LOTR background, not just another "we tried to make it exactly like the books/movies but failed"-type of game which disappoints both story and gameplay wise.

I must say that this looks promising, with actually real chances to become a good game.

This looks awesome! I'm glad Pandemic is working with this too. Hopefully it will be even better than Battlefront.

Read the first quote in my post :p

New interview. More awesomeness. Also says it will out for the DS as well as the 3 already mentioned formats. Some of the interesting facts in this interview include how some in-movie models have been dropped straight into the game (fellbeasts and nazgul), so they will obviously look exactly like in the movie.

Wow...
It has been reported that some victims of rape, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not WAKE UP. In this catatonic state, the victim lived in a world just like their normal one, except they weren't being raped. The only way that they realized they needed to WAKE UP was a note they found in their fantasy world. It would tell them about their condition, and tell them to WAKE UP. Even then, it would often take months until they were ready to discard their fantasy world and PLEASE WAKE UP

This was unexpected... for me anyway. Looks very promising, I don't like how similar the orcs all seem to appear, I would have thought they could have done a better job on those, but nevertheless this is a great piece of news :p Hopefully it will revive BFME playing a bit. New LOTR games has gotta bring (slightly) renewed interest in the older ones...

Battlefront II was a horrible abomination lore-wise. Here's to hoping they learned something from that travesty.

I really don't do requests and my Arnor Soldier is not fit for BFME. Don't ask me for either.

Yeah...I prefered 1 overall, especially with space combat being rather disapointing and maps like cloud city taken out.

But still...
