Mathijs : (22 May 2013 - 08:51 PM) Irene, I agree with your general attitude, but I think religion is only used as a 'cover evil' by the cleverest of fools. Most religious folk simply cannot deal with the 'unknown' and the great questions (most of which are irrelevant). It's a psychological reflex, a coping mechanism.
Mathijs : (22 May 2013 - 08:52 PM) Oh, and the best way to deal with love-related depression is to find someone else to fall in love with. Rinse and repeat.
MattTheLegoman : (23 May 2013 - 12:15 AM) Rinse and repeat and chase the wind till it all becomes meaningless. As another point ethanol is used as a type of euthanasia for animals that don't find a mate.
MattTheLegoman : (23 May 2013 - 12:22 AM) Don't do it Irene! ;p Love of that sort isn't the only thing good and worthy in this world.
MattTheLegoman : (23 May 2013 - 12:32 AM) I know God is real. I find Him when I selflessly serve others and when I create things of sad or joyous beauty. When you say you hate religions or you hate God, you are not saying anything new or profound. On other worldviews: I don't think you need to know God’s name to have part of Him in you and to do the right thing, and love mercy, to be humble and loving.
{IP}Pasidon : (23 May 2013 - 12:37 AM) I replaced the words "God" with "Burger King" and "Love" with "Chicken Fries".  All of a sudden, this conversation is neat.
MattTheLegoman : (23 May 2013 - 01:00 AM) Pasy! ;p Then as Mathijs said, that is your coping mechanism, but incomplete. Mathijs left out something, and that is hope.
Irenė Hawnetyne : (23 May 2013 - 04:28 AM) MTL, you're missing something here. You need to believe in God to go to Heaven, otherwise (for all good people who are heretics) you get stuck in Limbo. I see your point, Mathijs, but is that not self-contradictory, given that most religions are based upon the principles of faith? That people choose to believe something does not denote their utter belief in it, only that they should be benefited by that belief's pros. And, about the depression, it's more to do with me actually going out with him already, but being depressed about my hesitant cautiousness. And, thanks for that, Rad, very insightful.
Irenė Hawnetyne : (23 May 2013 - 04:29 AM) Wow. That was longer than expected.
MattTheLegoman : (23 May 2013 - 06:23 AM) As I said, people could have God already in them without knowing His name. When I have discussion with people, I don’t cross my mind with ideas of worthiness. I'm not worthy but I have hope in something. I try to understand where people are come from. Everyone I have met so far has their own issues and things weighing them down. A person’s worldview is something that can hold them back from moving. But I think positive commitment is important, pressing on and moving towards a worthy goal until the end, aiming for that “light at the end of the tunnel”. At the end you will be held accountable for what you did while alive. Christianity has this idea that everyone's evils are erased already.
MattTheLegoman : (23 May 2013 - 06:26 AM) Irene, I assumed your note was about dealing the loss of love. ;p
Devon : (23 May 2013 - 06:49 AM) Oh my, I miss these too :p
Mathijs : (23 May 2013 - 07:02 AM) Matt, all the things you believe you feel are chemical reactions and the rest is empty, meaningless rhetoric that cannot be argued one way or the other.
MattTheLegoman : (23 May 2013 - 07:06 AM) The chemical reactions are there because of laws and physics and science. It is there so we can find meaning! Yes, rhetoric can send us one of two places, nowhere or somewhere.
Mathijs : (23 May 2013 - 07:10 AM) It is there because it benefits our species' survival. You tell yourself it is there for other reasons (substituting evidence with faith because that way you can claim anything you like). 'Rhetoric can send us one of two places, nowhere or somewhere.' See, that is what I mean. Half the things you say are just pretty sentences with no meaning :p
Mathijs : (23 May 2013 - 07:14 AM) And Irene, yes, indeed, but the reason they wish to benefit from the 'pro's of their belief' is because they are afraid to see that there might not be anything otherwise, and they would have to deal with finality.
MattTheLegoman : (23 May 2013 - 07:34 AM) In how we create, we are more than simply a need to survive. You use language as well as I do. What should I fear? That all things must pass away. I am waiting for the answer in hope. Nihilists force hope out of them. I have said all I can, I am better at helping than debating, so I wonder why you have walled yourself in. And of course I am crazy. Is it not that best people are? ;p
{IP}Pasidon : (23 May 2013 - 08:29 AM) Hurry up and start calling each-other mean names...
MattTheLegoman : (23 May 2013 - 09:44 AM) Well I did call him a nihilist, that is pretty mean. ;p But I guess we are worlds apart. :p
{IP}Pasidon : (23 May 2013 - 10:24 AM) Yes... yes.... now insult his unborn children and white friends...
