The winner is MadHQ with his last min entry, the Yuri Face Blaster thingy... PartyzanPaulZy came a very close second with his Yuri Artillery & rami takes third with his Soviet Devastator. Thank you too everyone else that entered, I've very much enjoyed running this comp & look forward to next time.
Below is a more in-depth review of each voxel entered with pics & downloads.
MadHQ: Yuri Face Blaster
faceblaster.rar 178.55KB 140 downloads
OMG WTF first came to mind when I first laid eyes upon this vxl but then it is Mad after all, the face really is unique & something special but TBH what the hell is it supposed to be? Mega cannon, MCV, party van...
PartyzanPaulZy: Artillery
artillery.zip 437.79KB 241 downloads
You can tell a lot of time & effort has gone into this voxel, it’s bursting with detail that has been arranged nicely. It was very hard not to make this first place but I do feel it’s slightly too big & for some reason the offsets in the header are messed up, which has then been fixed in the HVAs. It works fine but it’s an easily fixable problem that shouldn’t really be there.
rami: Devastator
devastator.zip 877.17KB 194 downloads
I really like the basic design of this tank, the overall size & layout works well. It is slightly undetailed in places but it really is a case of less is more. TBH I might edit it slightly & use it in a mod myself!
Tony: South Dakota
south_dakota.zip 388.14KB 183 downloads
This is as with all of Tony’s work very well made to an above average level. However the auto-normals have really spoiled the hull making it look all bent out of shape & overall making the whole thing seem very plastically. Also being a World War 2 battleship accuracy is important to me, he has done a very good job as usual but there are a few small things that are out of proportion or slightly out of place. I however will probably be the only person in the community that will notice them XD
Zenoniations: Heavy Tank
heavytank.rar 883.97KB 162 downloads
This is a really big & chunky vxl that looks like it could squish battle fortresses! Its chunkiness is also its main fault IMO, even tho it’s very well made it looks very toy like & out of proportion in places (the MG on the turret is as big as one of the main guns!). The tracks are also well made but the large surfaces with only two different colours make them a bit bland & are crying out for some more attention.
TiberianFuture: Seeker
seeker.rar 424.45KB 163 downloads
I like the idea behind this voxel, TBH I think there should be more funky Scrin units. The design is well done & very accurate to the original concept. However the random blue texture with little detailing & overuse of remap spoils it for me. I’m also confused as to why there are no normals on any of the remap, I presume this was done intentionally?
Reaperrr: E-105
e105.zip 45.65KB 107 downloads
This voxel is based on one of my favorite World War 2 tanks, unfortunately it has the same random blue texture with little detailing that the Seeker has, also the few details that it does have are inconsistent. Again like the South Dakota I have to take accuracy into account. Reaperrr has added his own additions to the basic design but even so the proportions on the turret are incorrect & make it look a bit fat & squished.
Cranium/???: Warthog
warthog.rar 18.48KB 100 downloads
Technically Cranium should be disqualified for his vxl but someone has to come last. His entry is a freely available 3DS model for the internet converted to vxl (I have used the same 3DS model converted to the same size myself in the past). As well as that it has also been converted badly, it’s facing the wrong way so it will fly backwards!

Congrats also to partyzan and rami for 2nd and 3rd place.
I knew I wouldn't have much of a chance with this voxel, I should either have made it a more accurate recreation of the E100 with all the original details (though the shape is in line with the model I used as main reference, but it's possible that the reference model was inaccurate to begin with) or only use the E100 as loose inspiration and go for a more original voxel based upon it. They way it is now, it's "neither this, nor that".
And yeah, overall texture is too generic and undetailed, I know that. I'm doing ~1 voxel per year on average, I'm simply not routined enough at manual texturing to get significantly better results within an acceptable amount of time.
@Mig: About the turret's proportions, I'm afraid my english is not good enough to fully understand what you mean with "fat and squished", is it too wide, too high or just too big in general, and what does squished mean in this context, the only squished I know is the "squished infantry"-squished, but since the turret is rather a bit too big... I don't get it
Actually I took the first of the 2 reference models I gave you the links for and measured the height and width relations of turret and body and sticked to them when making the voxel, so unless I messed up somewhere in that process, the fault is more like 50% the creator of that reference model using wrong dimensions and 50% me choosing the wrong reference
Well that would still make it my fault for not researching carefully enough, so nvm.
Anyway, I think the ranking is justified, I had hoped for a somewhat better result but the competition was too strong.
I promise, however, I won't make it that easy to beat me next time
EDIT@Aro: Well I had less time than last year, this is just the 2nd voxel in 3 years, I'm just not routined at voxeling in general and texturing in particular to do great&detailed voxels in just 3 or 4 days. I also must admit my way of voxeling is probably rather outdated an inefficient compared to how most skilled voxelers work. That's why I opted for a less complex real-world based voxel instead of a completely original and highly complex one this time. Didn't work out that well, obviously...
But the good thing is, I'm now extremely motivated to come up with something much better next time

yeah, I see that now, too@Reaperrr
It looks a bit to high, wide & not long enough TBH, like it has been squished/pushed from the front & back forcing the top up etc.
thx, should have looked for such a diagram myself, silly me
definitely, I can't just leave it at thatif you wan to work on it some more.
