ohh more optimization!? thats nice, i just cant understand how you put higher quality models in a game, and then get more Fps,.. but i guess im just to stupid to ever understand stuff like that ;)

The textures are mip-mapped, so the game scales them while you're playing depending how far away you are from the unit. The new textures are just bigger so they allow you to get closer and still look good without taking too much of a performance hit because of the mip-mapping. That and other things that you can't see as easily, such as collision and shadow meshes.
