A classic inspired model change for the GDI rifle squad, the Minigunners perform the exact same function.

 

Release 7: Release 6 added the Medic, via an upgrade, for the Minigunners. Now from the same upgrade the Minigunners get a different banner carrier unit, the Officer from C&C Renegade.

The Officer has a minigun, and can hit both air and ground units!

In terms of the strength of the weapon, it is basically the Mutant marauders weapon.

Having a minigun, and being able to hit aerial units makes the Officer sound a lot better then it actually is. There is almost never a reason to build enough Minigunners so that the AA ability will become a factor (eg you would need 6 squads of minigunners to match the AA damage of a single Marauder squad).

Merely an irritant to aerial units

 

In fact the most useful boost that the Officer provides for the Minigunner squad, is that it increases the rate of fire by an additional 50%.

 

There is a very reasonable argument for the Medic that the Officer replaces being the more effective banner upgrade, due to the added survivability it brings.
