Years of watching 80's sci-fi movies and books, I figured the year 2000 was estimated to have unspeakable wonders and miraculous machines. Hover cars, laser guns, cybernetic limbs, plasma nonsense, brain chips, soilent green... not much of the popular fiction came true. Or did it? What do you think of the current millennium, and how many 20th century predictions do you know of came true?

Yea, but not quite in the same ways they were predicted. For example, where the heck is my Johnny-5 slave to do stuff for me?

Honestly, I'm amazed daily by scientific progress and new technology. I can't begin to imagine where we'll be in 50 years.
EDIT: I'm moving this to Open Topic, if you don't mind.

It was super imaginative. Old, crappy future technology had character you don't really see today. Like the new Robocop movie that just came out? That had no personality. Murphy just became some whinny baby that complained about his family and being a robo man. Actual Robocop Murphy had so much more going for it. The fake mechanics of it all had a dark reality behind it all, and yet somehow had a sense of humor at times. New Detroit was a dark, twisted place, and yet 10x's cooler than actual 2014 Detroit. And less trashy, somehow... it was a culture of its own, with neon zeppelins that had advertisements on them, and security corporations competing against each other that created a variety of cool elements in the city. No, Detroit today looks the same as it did in the 90's. Like a pile of trash.
And the whole point of this was a technology discussion for our technology section, Mathy.

Right, but our technology section is about actual tech related questions and issues. Computer building etc.

Just like the plane in Time Jumpers. Patrick said he wanted it to be used for practical applications, but the evil corporation man wanted to use it to change the results of the Civil War. But it could have been used for practical things. Like Patrick said.

We have nano materials, we're understanding the innerworkings of metals. We can make concrete that bends without breaking. We have surveying instruments that don't even require a full survey crew what used to take 4 men can now be operated by 1 man in a fraction of the time. We have 3D printers, and computers that fit into the palms of our hands, rockets that go into space and take pictures of distant rocks. The future is bright. At least in my mind.

I like how most of it is gradual practical stuff. Do we even need flying cars yet? (Yes we do because I can fly but I can't drive.) =p

I don't want practical stuff. I want to have fun with the future. Set phasors to stun... I don't even care.
Ah-ha! Now this is what I'm saying:
That miraculous creature machine is amazing. I want that thing's head mounted on my computer.

You're joking right? or do you believe the freemasons are the illuminati and taking over the world also?

It doesn't have to be Illuminati, but the richer sort does everything it wants to keep the less lucky ones at bay. Politicians, corporations and co. make this world a disgusting place. What do the citizens care about a quarrel between politicians of different nations that are mentally disabled enough to wage a war without any background? All corporations care about is the childish goal of having more money even though they already bathe in it.
We have the means of becoming an advanced species without wars, poverty, epidemics, hunger, divisions etc. and with a possibility to have everyone properly educated. But somehow... we aren't getting there. Who is to blame?

Looking at it objectively, the world is currently better than ever. Less hunger, less war, less poverty than ever before.
To me that is an important thing to be reminded of.
