Hello,

Question #1

I want to play on a LAN here at home with the kids.  Can I do that with MO3 ?  If so how to ?  TY :)

Question #2

Background -->  We play the TFD version of Yuri's here on the LAN at home.  The only mod I made was to put on a no cd just so we didnt have to keep disc juggling with other games.  Me and the kids will play.  All purchased copies etc.  We use the winsock32.dll fix to enable lan play.  Aside from winsocks and no cd we play the game with no other mods or adjustments.  The game plays smooth and seems perfect until the following issue occurs.  *Edit:  We all play on Windows 7 64 Bit systems.

Issue -->  During longer multiplayer games (usually 3 players that go on for more than 30'ish minutes) it seems that one player eventually freezes and/or gets a "reconnect" error.  They time out of the game and are destroyed.  This of course usually ruins the entire game and we are all bummed out.

Questions -->

1)  Is this a common issue in regular yuri's ?  I've tried googling, but I cant seem to find anything concrete about it.  Though various posts and a site hinted that it was common, I cant seem to find any definitive info on it.

2)  Is it addressable in regular yuri's ?

3)  Finally, does MO3 have anything in it that addresses this instability ?

I'm eager to try MO3 with the kids, but need LAN for home.  I'd be happy getting regular yuri's multiplayer stable for entire matches if MO3 has no home LAN support.

TY for any input.

AFAIK, you can play LAN. You don't need the Understorm patch (that's the winsock) because CnCNet's dll will also work. Just click on Launch Mental Omega instead of Play on CnCNet - tho launch the game with CnCNet beforehand at least once.

I don't know much about Understorm recon errors, but the game is pretty stable as-is now.

Thank you for the info.  I was able to play lan after launching the cncnet one time.

We did a round that ended with one player crashing and being dropped from the game after about 25-30 minutes.  So that was just like before.

So I started making other changes I've been reading about.

1)  Put in the VideoBackBuffer=no into the ra2md.ini file.

2)  Set 2 of the machines to run in compabitibility mode win 98/me and run as admin for the gamemo, yuri, ra2md, and gamemd .exe's.

We played a round that lasted over an hour with those changes.  The round eventually crashed, but every computer got the same error to the effect of "you need 2 players to play".  It happened to all at the same time, so I'm guessing that was more of a systemic bug, than just one player freezing / desynching.  We were doing a bit of spy infiltrating at the time it happened.

As a comment about the mod, I've got to say I am happily surprised.  I really love the changes so far, and all I've played is the US.  But they make it so fun, and its cool to have such a new variety of toys to use on the battlefield.

Great mod !

VideoBackBuffer AFAIK does not have an effect since Ares 0.2, because that version started to force every graphics memory into the system RAM and not the VRAM - which VBB also did albeit on a lesser extent.

I'm not sure about the second effect, neither. Compatmode always was bonkers - some PCs require it, others do not and it's quite random which ones need it at all.

TBH, I never heard of the "2 players to play" result.

Regarding compatibility mode - if the machine can normally run the game without setting a compatibility mode, is there a chance that using it would increase stability ?  Or is it simply a matter that if the game will launch / run without setting a compatibility, that its completely unnecessary ?

We'll try a game or two over the next few days.  I'll post regarding the results.

Thanks.

Okay we played another long game this afternoon.  Everything went smooth during the game, but it did crash.

We got the error about "loss of synchronization".

So we still consistently get crashes that occur on longer more epic games.  This was the case in yuri's and appears that its the case in MO as well.  The only thing thats different is that we get more descriptive error boxes.  Rather than a generic "reconnect" error.
