So, a trailer (sort of) for the BotFA Extended Edition:

More Elf-on-Bat action. This is what I've been waiting for.

EDIT: No, but seriously. Legolas hanging from a bat, upside down, mowing down a small army of orcs (equipped with long, pointy objects that they seemingly forgot how to use), driving a handicapped troll by lodging THORIN'S SWORD into its skull, stealing Beorn's signature kill... this is all so far beyond the most ridiculous thing I could have imagined for these films. I'm not disappointed as much as I am impressed. What the fuck. I was all for Legolas having an expanded cameo (and didn't mind him so very much in DoS, seeing as it made sense for him to be a captain of Mirkwood), but... how did this happen!?

Especially that Legolas part makes the movie awesome! Can't wait for the release!

Well believe it or not, but there are actually fans who enjoyed the films more than the books (like me).

I haven't been comparing the two though, have I? I've been criticizing the film(s) as a standalone entity. Haven't fallen back on ye olde 'it's bad because the book is different' arguments as far as I know. I dislike Legolas' role because it detracts from those of other, more central and interesting characters, I dislike Beorn not getting his kill because it makes his story feel pointless. I'm not hating on Legolas riding a bat because he didn't do so in the book. I'm hating on him riding a bat because he's riding a fucking bat. If Tolkien decided to go from a decent story to insane antics like PJ did, you best believe I'd be annoyed at the book also.

I agree, Mathijs, that you've reviewed them fairly.

Personally, I disagree with you though, I did enjoy them, despite their imperfections, however significant they may be. Hence, I'm still looking forward to TBoFA's extended edition, but still I have my reservations.

I wasn't really accusing you of comparing the books with the films or something. I just randomly stated that there are fans that prefer the movies over the books. Don't get the wrong idea though, I agree with you on a lot of aspects you just named here and in the first post. But I do really like those crazy stuff that Legolas does in the movies. Not only in the Hobbit but also in LOTR (Shieldsurfing or climbing an oversized elephant). I guess that's why they came with ideas like riding a bat or going full matrix with those falling stones.

I am looking forward to seeing the Extended Edition, to see if it improves the film overall, like the EE does on the first two films. If that Legolas sequence is about as stupid as it gets, I'm hopeful.

Don't know what to say actually, I liked the first two movies, the first more than the second, but at the third I walked outside the cinema with full rage. Yes I did compare the movie with the books and in that moment I totally hated it. It's beyond words how cheated I felt and was wondering why they did this to the movie. My mind stopped when I saw Legolas killing Bolg.

Of course now I watch them again and don't feel that bad but I usually skip the romance scenes with Tauriel and Legolas's bat scene and... many others. That trailer tho, doesn't give me high hopes about the EE.

Yea, usually extended editions compliment good movies.  With the Five Armies... if they removed anything worth people's time, then shame on Jackson and his lineage of filth.  You could cut over an hour of that movie out and probably make people happier.

So apart from the romance bullshit, may I ask which scenes should have been removed too in your opinion?

Well... the actual battle of the five armies.  A lot of it was worth several cringes, and didn't really contribute to Tolkien's story.

All the Alfrid parts could have been removed. They add nothing to the story except some annoyment(?) for the children.

Every scene that even hinted at the existence of Alfred should have been salted, purified, and burned upon a nitroglycerin crucifix.
