There is a way to work divs as columns , but it is considered a hack and basically only works on minimal layouts with little to none graphics incorporated...

I use divs for everything except columns. You will require tables until all browsers support css3 at least (since css3 has column properties for divs), and since most browsers dont even fully support css2 yet - dont count on tables being out of the way soon.

I still think a judicious mix of tables, div's, and CSS is the way to go. Way too many ugly hacks required to make a CSS layout work. Tables might be messy, but they get the job done.

Exactly what i'm implying. There are situations where tables are just better to use than divs.

You can use floats and margins or absolute positioning to do that.

To make complicated tableless layouts work in IE a few hacks are usually needed. I suggest you read the articles I linked to.

I suggest you look at some of these.

Those are hacks that tend to fall apart. I've tried a tableless 3 column layout and had no end of issues with it not behaving properly, and just said stuff it and threw in a couple tables to fix it. It probably could be done properly without tables, I just couldn't find a way and couldn't be asked to do it.

Absolute positioning isn't always viable, floats fall down to the next line when they dont meet the window width. Tables are permanent, hence they are superior for column layouts.

Yes, tables are often more flexible and easier to use, however, using them for layout is not semantically correct.

Making good tableless layouts does require a lot of practice.

I'll officially say divs great for column layouts when all browsers use the css3 specification, since thats when divs will get their css column property - something that should have been there from the beginning.

"Hindsight is Always 20/20"

CSS was a new technology when it came out, how could they think of every feature that someone might want?
