Have you considered feasible a crowdfunding or Patreon?

 

If I'm not wrong, Planetary Annihilation became a real thing with crowd funding (and a nauseating publicity in any youtube comment I remember of), and some other games as well have been made that way.

The cool, huge and incredible mod like "Darkness Within" is definitely worth to be  a selling as a separate game. It changes the DoW gameplay like no one mod made before. But it will require financial injections and resources, for example, in order to make a full-fledged voice acting.

It wouldn't be the first time that an initial modification becomes a new game or an expansion: see the case of Forgotten Empires which eventually brought again the AoE 2. I'm sure there are other cases. But bear in mind that this was a project made from a team who apparently didn't gather any resource from third parties. I remember that a game made with the free engine Spring become some Star Wars rts if I'm not wrong: initially Spring was conceived to a 3d port for the game Total Annihilation.

 

In GOG.com, some unofficial patches are included in games to grant compatibility with modern pcs and to iron out bugs (yet there is the option to play without, with the "legacy" game you buy indeed). Although the authors are not paid for, as they continue updating those patches in some cases and as it is usual, for free and devotion.

 

I personally don't see many future in short term on this as the franchise has been very tainted since DOW3 and people stick with old but still fun games of DOW1 or DOW2, with a solid and veteran mod content. I don't see any interest of restarting the DOW from Sega/Relic. Relic currently has its last bullet with the Age of Empires 4, which I'm pessimistic about.

 

I am in particular of the opinion that mods are essentially one of the few things that are free from monetization in this world and are mainly a task of love and altruism, with a bit of a personal ego satisfaction. Steam tried to monetize the workshop mods or something some time ago and for what I have seen, fortunately, it didn't succeed. I don't want to think how toxic would become the modding scene if some people begin "to borrow" the work of others to make profit. In this regard it's worth to mention that there are cases of free games which are sometimes victims of being sold in a CD format with a third party installer by unscrupulous business.

Ok so this is my understanding of what you are wanting to do:
You wish to make an official remake of DoW1 in the DoW3 engine.
You wish to add a new race to this remake, new units and change how some units work.
You wish to balance the multiplayer aspect.
You wish to sell this as a new game and not as a mod or expatiation.

If that is correct you would need Sega, Relic and Games Workshop to agree on allowing this to happen.
Sega because they own the DoW franchise rights.
Relic because you wish to use there own internal engine.
And Games Workshop because they own everything 40k.

If all of the above happens I have a couple of requests.
First I would like to see an official mod tools released with some documentation of what does what.
I would like to see all aspects of DoW3 kept in the game even if they are not used.


If this really does happen I would be willing to work part time on the project assuming it is official and I will be paid.

 

 

It should also be noted I started this a couple of days ago because me and some people where talking about how DoW3 was a good game but a poor implementation of Warhammer 40k.

To see if there is enough response/support for a money funded rework I'd suggest to create a vote guess that should work in the forum that way you see if it is an endeavour that can be done and is doable with your goal.

As for me I won't spent money on that, but best of luck to you of course.

Then you'd know your budget and the dedication of the fan base before even starting.

 

 

Crowd funding would certainly be a great option. We would need to get Gameswork shop approval of course to even begin to set up a crowdfunding account.

Well...

 

I'm so impressed and happy there are more people out there who love this game as much as I do and have the ablity to work on it.

 

I have been talking to Relic for more than a year now about just getting them to fix the "transferring badges/drop bug". So, if your team could do it and conserve the game as it plays now minus the abusable bugs, I'd be thrilled and even willing to pay for it!!

 

However...

 

I'm not so thrilled on some of the proposed changes. You're shifting it to DoW 3, which a lot of people -me included- don't really like. DoW 3 showed us that more emphasis on heroes isn't the way to go... Maybe your changes aren't as gamewarping as the DoW3 heroes though. 

 

Balance changes are an iffy thing, albeit needed. You change one thing and it cascades through a whole lot of other necessary changes. You'd need a dedicated team of testers that can overcome biases and take the game as a whole. That's a lot to ask for in the existing community, if you ask me... If you decide to go down this road -and I'd support it, if done well and right- balance changes should be competitive multiplayer minded!

 

I kinda like the flying units, even though they could have been done better. Some of them are an answer to very specific vulnerabilities for races. What is a Falcon in your opinion? A flyer or a rhino? Like, you can't take away Tempests and leave the Falcon... stuff like that.

 

Personally...

 

I kinda like the nostalgic look and feel of DoW 1. If you could deal with balance and bugs, I'd be more than happy already. The game engine might just not be fit to play with imported models -upgrades of the existing models.

 

In short...

 

Psyched you're gathering people to get this going for real. I hope you've thought this true and really plan for everything because this game has seen several efforts amount to nothing in the end (considering basic online multiplayer). The UA mod is great and I have a lot of respect for the people who have pored heart and soul into this project but I don't think it is a realistic supplement for competitive based online multiplayer.

 

New races are not a priority to me. To have proper working and bugfree existing races and a working online multiplayer (with stats, automatch, ... ) are priority number one I'd say. Next would be better balance but that will consume so much time to get right.

 

That's just my 2 cents...

Yeah we were aware on how DOW 3 put a lot of emphasis on hero units & their game changing abilities, however that is not something we would be bring to the remastered version of dow 1. We do however wanted to give players options on hero units to field. 

 

Bug fixes & balance changes will have competitive multiplayer in mind from the start.

 

Flying units we thought about a few options, one of them is treating flying units the same way they were treated in DOW 3.

 

We are aware of the community negative feedback on DOW 3s "cartoony" graphics, this will be addressed, the best thing about the Essence Engine is, it could be scaled accordingly & is much more robust. Partly we also needed a viable solution to fix DOW 1s pathing issues.
