I bumped this topic a lot up. Go here for the current discussion:

OpenWar

OpenWar is an open-source project to create a free RTS engine. It will take away the limits we have when modding BFME 2 (not saying that you should stop doing that, btw ). More and more people get working on it, including me, Solinx, The Dead Player and Darvin from MEV.

Join now and help with the creation of this program (and make a better world  ) or just join and follow it's progress....join anyway

Id happily support you, but I can't see how I can be of use. :(

Well, the only thing that I could do is to come up with ideas to make things easily modable, that's about it :(

If I am still around by the time the engine is finished, I wouldn't mind to help build a game on it.

But do you expect any certain skills? Like.. I don't know, programming or something?

2play and other people would handle the programming and others would do models and such i guess.

for making the engine you will need C# Java programming. for making a game on it you basically need the same skills as for modding bfme

But you won't try to make your engine read INIs, will you? If this is not the case, you'll need a bit more skills than just modding bfme...

That all depends on how the engine is developed. In any case, it is to early to say anything about it now as a lot of things can happen during the long road to a final release.

I wish you luck. If it goes anything like the several attempts at this before (I've tried twice myself) it will end up with some ideas, and maybe a bit of code before people realize just how much work a full engine is and go back to modding.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

maybe taking a look for some older released engines ( if there are any ). or contacting some studio that makes freeware games could be good idea :thumbsupsmiley:

i realize it's a huge amount of work, which is exactly why i'm making it open-source: to share the load (hopefully)

and no i'm not going to use the blasted INI's, XML FTW!

i find several open source game engines on the net. some of them look really good. maybe it is good idea to use one of those and just modify it to fit the purpouse that is needed.
