For my current course Game development at school, I'm designing a game (and implementing a demo), for which I have this concept. Feedback please

Concept: The Order of the Fox
A Splinter Cell type game in a medieval/fantasy setting. You play a member of the Order of the Fox, a secret order founded to protect and preserve the ancient secret of magic, which was nearly lost from the world. This order has relations with many countries, but is allied to none. New members are recruited as children from all over the world.

Your character (which is nameless, or rather you can name him yourself), has just finished his training and is now going to execute several sneaking missions for his leaders. The focus in these missions is generally to intrude somewhere without being seen, but sometimes direct action is unavoidable. You can use conventional weapons or magic spells to fight. Over the course of the game, you can develop certain fields of your magical skills by gaining experience in using them. You can also find weapons and items to use later.

Demo level
You start somewhere in a small city. At the center of this city is a hill with a well-guarded fortress on it. In this fortress lies a valuable magical crystal of some sorts (haven't figured it all out exactly yet). You need to steal this.

First you need to cross the city to reach the fortress. The city is guarded by guards, and villagers will scream and reveal you if they see you.
Once there you need to pass three walls, which are of course guarded as well.
In the center of the fortress, go down some stairs to the underground part of it. Here you need to bypass more guards and some puzzles (finding keys) to reach the center hall where the crystal is kept.

After getting the crystal, some alarm will go off. Once you get outside, you need to fight your way out of the fortress.

Unique selling points:
- Splinter Cell gameplay in a medieval/fantasy setting.
- Sneaking game with RPG elements.

Some questions to consider..

Why do villagers scream? Are you hideously deformed? Why are guards immediatley suspicious? Are they on the look out? Are "find the key 10 floors up" puzzles really needed in modern gameplay? Whats going to make the sneaking exciting to me as a player, what special abilities do I have to aid my sneaking? Or do you just have to walk slowly in shadows? Ever played the Thief games?
Melee combat will be very tricky to do right.

ok, so they don't really scream as if they are frightened, but they will alert the guards
the guards are suspicious because that's what they are told to be, and i look suspicious.
perhaps i need to reconsider some things in the village part though

Are "find the key 10 floors up" puzzles really needed in modern gameplay?

it allows me to make the level a little less linear

Whats going to make the sneaking exciting to me as a player, what special abilities do I have to aid my sneaking?

what makes the sneaking exciting is what makes any sneaking game exciting: fear of getting caught, and feeling rewarded when you get in. you will have some spells to aid you.

Melee combat will be very tricky to do right.

i'm not thinking of anything complex like different moves, stances and offense/defense. just a sword/dagger/fist you can swing and takes down enemies in it's radius (kind of like in BFME)
