Well, I'm not sure we can rate BoN until we have a pink featherbed on the website... [/insidejoke] :p

Careful. This link is DANGEROUS. Do NOT click it. This one, however, is fine.

The only mod here with a chance is RJ-RotWK (possibly SEE too), and even they'll struggle if they don't get their next release out soon as that will bring a load of publicity.

It's not negative, it's being realistic.

TEA made it into Top 100 and that's one of the best released mods this community has seen (only RJ and maybe SEE surpass it), no other BFME mod has made it. The BFME community has never been large enough to compete with all Source mods and other mods that dominate ModDB's awards.

RJ and SEE are the only finished mods that, imo, have the quality, quantity and following needed to get into the Top 100.

Don't also forget, that the difference in technical quality of an RTS mod, compared to an FPS mod is staggering. Playing with inis and dropping simple meshes pales in comparison to what is generally found in a lot of FPS modding.

Also, to be frank, the BfME community has yet to actually produce anything wholly significant enough - all of the major mods have done little to shake up the original game formula, and all of the released mods, bar one which was never completed, is still just a pile of additions to the original game.

If you want to see a BfME mod in the top 100, you guys are going to have to do something significant - not just add a few new adhoc units, or transplant existing fantasy universe A/B directly over the top; you need to sit back and do something completely different - you could produce a more modern naval combat mod, a supreme commander style RTS, or even set the game in space, or even underwater; but these things have never happened.

It's not to say that BfME's modding community is necessarily poor; but it doesn't fit the bill enough to gain the sort of attention required to make it into ModDB's finest.

I just went there and voted for all the 3rd Age mods. You know: RA, LW, 4rth Age, SEE, RJ, RC.....and more, I just can't think of them off the top of my head.

Even put in a vote for Elven Alliance, for nostalgia's sake. :p

Ambershee has the right of it. Don't take this as in insult to the community in general though... IMO it's more of a problem with the engine. SAGE has a bunch of games now that all run on the same engine (practically no real differences between modding for Generals, BFME1/2, C&C3) that would just work better for most TC style mods. It's like... if I was trying to do a TC mod, I'd rather build it on the most advanced version of the engine, which is certainly not BFME. What does BFME provide as an advantage? Practically nothing, save the game's assests themselves. These aren't useful except to a mod that uses swords and bows, so I think this is one of the reasons we don't see anything new coming up.

This is in addition to the game being relatively poorly known - we just don't attract players, much less modders, who aren't LOTR fans.

I really don't do requests and my Arnor Soldier is not fit for BFME. Don't ask me for either.

If we all vote on all of our listed mods we may get somewhere near the top 100 :p

BfME is perfectly capable of getting the attention - mods for older games do often grace the 'mod charts' - but they really do have to pull out all the stops :p

Well then, how about a mod for BFME I that will add an entire new world, Narnia, complete with a new GUI look and campaigns? Is that innovative enough? :p

It might be, but we just don't have the voting/fan base here to support it. The popularity of some of the fps games and mods on forums/communities is just staggering.

One thing that always seperates BFME modding is that the modding is nearly 100% LotR fan based. Almost every mod I've seen has been driven by people wanting to mod a lord of the rings game more than anything else, creating what they think BFME should have been. We don't mod because of an engine, we don't mod to revolutionize and change it from a Lord of the Rings game, this modding community seems to always be about making a good game better in our opinion.

So I doubt we'll ever be in the forefront of modding, but that is not why we mod BFME. We mod because we love LotR, and it's a chance to make our imprint in middle-earth.

And since BFME modding is about LotR and not modding, it seems like most people who vote won't ever register and have their vote counted at moddb :p :p That counts against us almost as much as anything.

Robert J.

edit: to ridder geel below

That rank is not votes. It's just your ranking in the number of hits you have since it has last been reset, which probably is daily. It bears no indication to votes, and often it could be hits from people glancing at news items/downloads and checking out your page.
