After brainstorming some cool ideas with ed on msn, this would be my ideal doable star wars mod.

2 Factions, Republic and CIS

Republic

- - -

Units

Clone troopers - Basic clone infantry
Clone commandos - Sabotage troops. Can place explosives on buildings, stealthed
ARC Troopers - Single units. Very Dangerous, can toggle to rocket launcher.

ATRT - Small anti infantry mech
ATTE - Heavy Mechs, good vs structures and clumps of units.
SPHA-T - Long range artillery and maybe AA?
Gunships?

Jedi - Can fight effectively on own or combine with a group of clones to make them more effective (act as banner carriers?)

- - -

Heroes

Yoda
Mace
Obi-wan
Anakin

C3PO+R2

??
Kit Fisto
Plo Koon
Aalya Secura (sp? :thumbsupsmiley:)
Ki-adi Mundi
Shaak Ti
Seasse Tin
Adi Gallia

---

Buildings

Citadel - Senate or Jedi Temple
Resources - ?
Barracks - Clone Barracks
Factory - Mechs
Armory - Armory?
Well - Bacta station?
Statue?

---

CIS

Units

Battle Droids - Standard infantry
Super Battle Droids - Possibly just battle droids with heavy armor, but preferably own unit.
Droideika - Heavy infantry

Dwarf Spider Droid - Basic anti infantry mech
Spider droid - Heavier mech
Tank droid - Heaviest mech
Hailfire droid - AA?

- - -

Heroes

Dooku
Grievous
Assajj?

??
Sidious
Nute Gunray?
Wat Tambor?
San Hill?
Passel Argente?
Shu Mai?

---

Buildings

Citadel - Core ship
Resources - ?
Barracks - Light Factory?
Factory - Heavy factory?
Well - Repair shop?
Armory - Armory?
Statue?

As you can see, it's still very, very rough. I don't even know if it'd be better for bfme1 or bfme2/rotwk ;) Feel free to offer any advice or opinions or ideas.

Why make a mod like this for bfme games when there are better games for this like EaW, DoW, or even cnc games?

In fact a DoW version of this would be fucking amazing now that I think about it :p I mean, it already has a ton of the crap u'd need for a sw mod; melee weapons, pew pew laser beams, hover tanks, walkers, cover, and heroes, hell the SS expack even has a campaign with different planets. You should get DoW and then make this mod with that :p

I think the thing is that we are used to the kinks and old ways of modding this game, this is a very basic idea at the moment and would require alot of time and effort from those involved. And it seems alot more plausible to base a star wars mod in the Prequel era because the Jedi are still around and the factions are more together than they are in the Original Trilogy. Plus the Rebel Alliance didn't really have that many vehicles for land assaults in the Original Trilogy.

The thing that annoyed me about EAW was that there was no real work involved apart from clicking to get more units plus it didn't make sense to me that units were trained on land and somehow had to be brought in from space, the graphics were fairly limited on the characters with alot of errors on the models which were clearly visible ingame. Although they put alot of effort into the effects, I felt that all the effort was expended in space battles and conquest modes which while they are fun are still very limited. The Jedi in the game had only one or two powers and very often used their powers automatically which meant they were never useable when you needed them. Apart from Yoda in FOC the fighting anims were terrible & the interface was horrible and the list goes on - don't get me wrong I still love the game but I feel realistically speaking that I love it only because it's Star Wars in RTS & that as a community with multiple talents that we could make a mod that would be ten times more interesting.

With Robs breakthrough on the WOTR maps there's no telling what could be done, perhaps swapping it out entirely and replacing it with an interplanetary map, the functions and everything would be the same just the Map and GUI would look different.

Things that I would want to see in this mod:

R2D2 & C3PO
In Star Wars he was used as a spy, and carried the Death Star plans, he also repaired vehicles, opened doors and bartended and occasionally flew. So I would suggest that R2 would be able to use the rocket boosters to fly, he should also be able sabotage, hack (as in take control of enemy buildings by hacking computers), repair vehicles and take control of enemy gates. To offset this R2 would be an incredibly slow moving character.
As for 3PO he's pretty much R2s comic sidekick who occasionally, gets sold, translates, gets blown apart and get his head put on a battle droid as well being given to Jabba and being an aid to Princess Leia & her mother. So 3PO I believe should be able to convert creeps to the side of the Republic and serve as a distraction for enemy troops by drawing their fire for a limited time.

That's it for now, typing cramps.

PS - Yoda I bumped this in case you're online, i put together some models last night here they are, I have to do something about Sidious forehead though

At the moment we're emailing the creators of a Jedi Academy mod just to make sure we can use some of the models they put up for download, that's why there aren't any shots with grievous there.

But yeah, as soon as we get a reply we'll post a video ;)

Looks like a good start. I'd actually personally just drop the heroes, and implement a 'Create-a-Jedi' for the faction leader. If you're still inclined to have heroes, I'd cut the list down a lot. Three or so is a healthy number, and quicker to implement. Focus time on making the armies themselves cool enough.

Ooh, I'd love to get create a jedi.

The first group of heroes are one's that I'd want the factions to have. 4 (5 really, cause ed want's the 3PO and R2 and he's modelling) for the republic, and 3 for the confederacy. The rest are just possible ideas that would be cool.

So yeah, that's a really really rough draft of what I have in mind. Units and buildings are definitely a priority for me though before 20 different jedi.

We got permission to use the reskinned version of Grievous, I'm currently waiting on permission to use Obi Wan, the email to Anakins owner came back rejected, these models are quite old, and they are all uploaded as models in their own right, and not in mods, while I'm going to try and reach the owners for special permissions I've decided we'll plough ahead and make sure, ABSOLUTELY sure to credit each and every model to their respective owners. And if any owner should find a problem with our using the models we will immediately remove them from the mod and replace them with models which I will make myself. I understand the time and effort that goes into modelling, I myself don't mind people using my models provided their own work is of a particular standard, not saying my work is of a particular standard just work that seems as though time, effort and energy has gone into it. Before we post pictures of the ingame Jedi, let me first give credit to the makers.

Thanks Matias! :shiftee:

Hopefully in the future. Right now the elf ones seem to fit pretty well, but once we get all the basics of the factions sorted I'm sure ed will go back and do a few.

Edit: Here's some Grievous shots:

2d Space battles are possible in a way. Check out LOTR in Space maps on MEV. You can make part or all of the terrain invisible, and then you can place glowing objects below groundlevel to look like stars.

So you could have a wide rectangular map with the really big command ships / holders at each end which have visible terrain and act as your base, a bit like in Battlefront II (or a lot like :shiftee:), and then have all the gap in between them has invisible space-like terrain.

Yeah, I know space battles would be doable. Though I'd just be happy to get skirmish working :shiftee:

WotR is also possible (or the bfme1 campaign, though I think we're going with bfme2 now). Rob said it would be fairly easy to just make a black screen with some white dots and some blue/orange/whatever circles representing planets.

But again, if we get skirmish done I'd be happy enough ;)

The thing that I always thought was a problem, particularly in EAW was that there was no real development of land battles, the interface seemed sloppy, the hero powers very often fired due to the AI. The space battle part of EAW was hugely expanded with a wealth of options and different ships & upgrades. With this mod I want to focus on adding in some of that momentum that the land battles had in Star Wars, they were every bit as epic as the space battles, I just feel EAW didn't do it justice so my role in this mod really is to make sure we get that flavour added. Eveything else is secondary atm, getting the land battles right is the major priority.
