It's probably why I don't post often...that, and I rarely have unencumbered time to get caught up with reading the forums and thus able to post replies.
It wouldn't surprise me to have the "quote" button disabled from my posts should they reach a certain length or character count. Or for threads to suddenly have "Glaeken has responded" warnings listed in their headers.
I'm kind of used to seeing this look from my students -->

I also tried for a while to turn the IP Clan into some sort of mapping hub with mentoring and such, but for certain differences in attitude, that didn't take off either.
Haldir on our old forum we had Apprentices, for those not good enough to qualify as {IP} but still wanting to learn. We probably only had about 5 or 6 though, as it was a new scheme, and of those I think only Pasidon's and one of mine actually stuck with it and got better. Fundamentally, mentoring is a poor idea anyway. Well, our system was, which was basically one-to-one tutoring.
Although whatever Pasidon did seemed to work. And I think my little template map on texturing/scenery design with text went down quite well with my guy. Aside from that it was just helping with general queries eg. how to do X in scripts, what's wrong with my map.ini etc. etc. Essentially, just someone you can PM/MSN when you need help.
IP just suffers from chronic inertia.

In my opinion i think it would be a great idea to have some type of thing where there is a Master and an Apprentice because when i first started here i felt like i knew absolutely nothing and was willing to quit within a day because no one would encourage me. I think that this would be a good way of having a lot more people stay and actually make a mod. It would bring the community back to life.
But now after a year i don't need help very often and i can usually figure stuff out by myself. I encourage every forum member here to at least stop and think about this type of idea, with out dismissing it without a further glance. Maybe in the registration process at the end have it say you have been apprenticed to "Name","Name" will take all of your questions and answer them in this area: Code,Graphic,Map etc...
Anyways i have still only been here for a year now, and in the forums i find it can be very dangerous in a wordy way because if you get on someones bad side they might never help you again which just leaves the person needing help left in the dust feeling helpless.
You could then after half a year or a few weeks give them a test to make a general mod adding a new hero and such and if they dont complete it help them complete it and dont say figure it out for your self, actually help them...
Sorry about grammar and or spelling i'm and not very good with words sometimes.

Truth be told if people aren't going to teach themselves how will they last?
The older modders here taught themselves most of what they know.
When we first started there was only a handful of very basic tutorials.
There was one tutorial for skinning, basic coding and how to add art to the game.
That was it and out of that a lot of mods started.
Today T3A has tons of tutorials teaching you just about everything which is still uncommon among modding communities even among Revora modding communities.
Basically instead of asking for help or seeking mentoring spend more time improving.
