Chavez insists the reforms are meant to deepen democracy and give Venezuelans more of a voice government, especially through neighborhood-based "communal" councils.

He uses that word democracy, but I think it means about what it means in Pakistan. You can vote for president, as long as you're voting for the right person.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

It is just as democratic as France or even England. The same person can be re-elected indefinitely. But, in the middle of his mandate, you can also kick him with a referendum where people choose if he stays or not.

That part sounds fair.

Now, we all know the way he manipulate his armies and the massive use of populism to twist the results of these elections and referendums.

Chavez is an immense problem. He gave all those people from Colombia homes so he could get votes, no he can do anything. And hes just asking to be attacked with his taunts.

He just wants to make us look bad.

Slowly?! This might be the fastest change from democracy to dictator I've seen in my lifetime. Nothing a precisely fired bullet to the head can't cure. :)

I don't know about that. Calling anyone that doesn't vote for his changes to allow himself to be president for life a traitor seems a little less than democratic to me.

What I said is that allowing a president to be re-elected for life and having a referendum to keep it or not in the middle of the time are democratic things, where the first one (unlimited re-election) is applied on other countries as well. However, Chavez behaviour is not democratic at all. He is a populist dictator.

We're all worried about the referendum that Chavez got defeated in, thus keeping term limits in place... but nobody even looks at the massive, widespread election fraud in Russia, or that United Russia "declared" Vladimir Putin the spiritual "leader of Russia"?
Nice to know we've got our priorities straight.

Russia is a big pile of explosives. hopefully we in the west won't run around with detonators and cry havoc right away. i wonder if Putin would have gotten as far as he has done now if we had a less "interesting" president in the states. the world have been enthralled by neo-con policy the last 7-8 years, and Putin has worked in the shadows of that light show to build up a one-party-state again. not one based on some vague ideology for the people, but for the nation Russia. i am somehow a bit nervous about how much more defensive such a state might be.

on the topic of Chavez losing that vote. good enough, but he'll probably try again. hopefully he won't be able to brainwash way too many more people in that time.

yeah, he got zero this time, or at least that's what i think, imo he lost on purpose, meaning that we all know he controls the whole national voting center, maybe he did that because there's lost of angry students, he might try to push the laws he was trying to change by other means, also i received news that there are groups of students (alledgely and in case this is truth, shhhh)) against the government that are armed, which worries the hell out of me, because i don't know how many students and all

A rebellion is still better than letting an authoritarian government walk right over you and take your freedoms.

Yeah, but in the end the price paid will really take it's toll don't you think?

Well if it gets that far, the price has already been paid. The only question is are you going to let it get worse, or are you going to do something about it?
