I was thinking it might be interesting to write a round-robin style thing, much like that Shadowfall thing that Hasfusel has just mentioned, except in whatever genre anyone would prefer. Someone else can feel free to start it, and/or suggest an appropriate opening for the tale. Fantasy/sci-fi, modern world, romantic, comedy, whatever, who's interested?
I hope I am a good enough writer that some day dwarves kill me and drink my blood for wisdom.

Yeah, that sort of thing. It'd be kinda like the RPG Frontier, except that instead of one person directing it and everyone controlling their character, everyone controls every character to a certain extent and writes a few paragraphs in turn.

As I said, could be of any format whatsoever. You could even change it half way through to accommodate the weirdness of your own writing, for those of you with less conventional writing styles. :p

Did someone say weirdness?

I'm in.

Edit: But first, I need to finish my poem for the contest.

That's fine, just whenever we actually start this thing, all you'd have to do is post the next bit and maybe keep up with the story. It could be quite fun, methinks.

Sounds fun - I'm in.

Wicked, somebody suggest a theme and style. I think fantasy/sci-fi of some form would be easiest, as most other brands of fiction require the ability to write in a certain style and not just talk about swords and guns and lasers and killing things and stuff. You know what I mean. Ideas?

Starship Troopers? That's an amusing setting :p

I'm in. But I'd prefer not Starship Troopers, 'cause I never saw it and don't really want to do research for this. I'm lazy.

I think a general fantasy world would be easiest, because then we've just got to put limits on how magic works, how evil the dragons are, and put up a little map and we can go. Much easier than coming up with a sci-fi world. But we could steal the setting from a book or movie, as FZM said.

Asimov's Foundation Trilogy, perhaps?

Foundation would be good. A quick summary for those who don't know:

A future world in which the human Empire has risen and, very recently, fallen and disintegrated. Settlements are scattered across planets and are gradually reconnecting. At the edge of the human sector of space is the Foundation planet, an academic institute based around the teachings of one particular scientist, who used social trends to identify the probable patterns of the future. He left video messages at certain times giving advice to future generations on how to handle the crises he expected to emerge. He proved remarkably accurate.

Anyway, this world has faster-than-light space travel, probably using some form of warp space, and atomic fusion-fission reactors for power, even in hand-held weapons, so far has the technology advanced. Though, as I recall, there is no mention of laser weaponry. Let us assume it proved inefficient.

Of course, a fantasy world would be equally easy to create. If anyone feels like writing up a quick summary of one, that would be appreciated. Thoughts?

Meh, either's good. Personally I'm inclining towards fantasy as most of the RP's that I'm in are all future-y.

Here's some thoughts:
Standard fantasy world (though I'd prefer no stereotypical elves or dwarves; they piss me off for some reason ;)) with many cool mythical creatures, for example centaurs, manticores, sphinxes...that sort of thing. Pretty much anything that was in Heroes of Might And Magic 3, if anyone else has played that game, classic though it is
Dragons: Pretty smart animals. Don't eat people normally as there's easier prey out there. Probably don't sit on piles of treasure either, though perhaps they're valuable in themseles as captured creatures, or for the finest and toughest leather in the world and such like things.
Magic:...will require some thought. Perhaps, drawable upon by everyone via certain thaumaturgical devices but can easily destroy the mind and body of an untrained user who cannot restrain it. Or something.
Of course I don't look busy; I did it right the first time.

(though I'd prefer no stereotypical elves or dwarves; they piss me off for some reason tongue.gif)

quoted for truth, i feel the same way... about dragons too though

i dont really want to be on a book or anything. It just, to me, feels restricting...
anyway, if you want we could probably do a mix of the two, a fantasy sci fi.

or something like doom, how teleporting technology brings demons into our world(well, it was mars, but it was still cool)

but like i said, whatever you's want...

if we are going fantasy what about instead of your boring generic fantasy, we change it up a bit...
maybe set it in a different place, instead of your average European medieval world...

Mix it up like what, exactly? Instead of your typical medieval European world, we could set it in a quasi-Amazonian setting, that would be cool. Step pyramids, lots of gold, think Aztecs. And instead of elves, dwarves, dragons and that shit we could have some form of other non-human beings. I won't suggest lizardmen because that's the stereotype of jungle enemies, so we'll have a look at something different. Suggestions? (Gods above, who knew organising this would take so damn long?)

lol @ last bit

and yeah, i was thinking exactly that, or some Arabic/Egyptian/Persian or something type setting.
i think an amazon tpye place might be cool, with different tribes, and tribal magics (shamans, necromancers, voodoo, instead of the same old wizards, sorcerers and average 'magic')

you could then have like amazon tribes of women, your aztec like tribes men, and the shamans and stuff.

then have cool creatures like giant lizards, frogs and mosquito's, small demons(like the 'fetishes' in diablo 2), water creatures that inhabit the streams, then have your humanoid's like panther-people or (im gonna do it... im gonna say it) lizard(or even snake) men. what about a super religious lot of humanoids who live in temples and are sorta like a more aztec-ish version of the egyptain animal headed people (like having hawk heads or something)

tree-giants too (sorta like those things in lord of the rings maybe? but different-er)
[infact.. diablo 2's act 3 is giving me a lot of inspiration right now, anyone who's played it will know what i mean]

and then have the place have cool decaying temple ruins, and maybe even the undead stalking through the jungle(not just undead humans)
i mean, it makes sense if you have voodoo necromancers that you could have normal 'renegade' undead... maybe even aztec-ish mummies
(you know the ones i mean right?)

wow, this is sounded pretty neat... anyone else? come on, we need input from everyone, what are your suggestions?

Alright. I suggest the following:

1) Setting--Essentially the Mayan Empire without us having to research them, so basically a bunch of united city-states in a Central American jungle sort of place.
2) Weaponry, technology etc.--No steel, mass-produced refined metal sorts. That doesn't mean stone clubs, but it does mean that nobody has a broadsword or other European/Asian weaponry. Yes, you can have your spear with an iron tip, but there's no point in knights-in-shining armor riding horses if you're in a jungle. That and there weren't any horses there anyway. You'll see pyramid temples and aquaducts, but no cannons and bombs.
3) Paranormal creatures, Magic, etc.--I'm going kinda with something similar to actual Mayan mythology; magic is reserved for the many gods and their priests and servants. Thus our protagonist will not have magical prowess, but the Gods will interfere and (s)he will face all sorts of twisted stuff, just make sure it doesn't look like the steryotypical stuff 'cause we left that behind when we left Eurasia.

Obviously, whoever writes most will do a lot of the setting.

one more question

is this going to be that everyone controls the main character?
and what about other characters? is there going to be a group of 'adventurers'?

That's just a matter of how the story develops. I'll leave this thread open so you can post in here if you want to introduce a new character or kill one off or something, but generally you'll have total freedom with what to do, as long as it's consistent with the background and basic storyline. No "they were all doomed, but the aliens came down and saved them, lasering all their enemies!"

I think we might start with more than one character, just to mix it up. They can pick up friends and enemies along the way.

In case you hadn't figured, the story is taking place here.
