Something that I mike challenged me to think about was what would my ideal Lord of the Rings Game contain. I decided to challenge the fanbase with this as well, just to see what everyone would like to have in a game if they could get a company to make it for them.

All that you have to do is post an idea, that can be strictly Lord of the Rings, or it can be a little bit of a mix of Lord of the Rings, and something else. I'll use mine as an example:

It would not be pure LotR, rather, it'd have medieval Europe and Asia as well, just to add a little twist.

Factions I'd get from our world would be (from europe) the English and the French. From Asia, I'd have Sengoku Japan and the Three Kingdoms era of China

There'd have three camapigns, one for Lord of the Rings and one for the Mediaeval Earth. The third would be a special campaign combining the two groups.

I'd also probably eliminate uber powerful superpowers (ie, Earthquake or Balrog) for the factions of Middle Earth. I'd probably not have 'Evil Campaigns', but rather have the player choose their side at the beginning of each battle, also for a little twist.

The fations of Earth would each have the same basics, but they'd have three elites that no one else had, like the Japanese would have Samurai, Ronin, and Shogun. Seige would be have an increased role, but would take longer to train and would also cost more.

Heroes would be a little more powerful than an equivalent standard unit (ie, Aragorn = swordsman) and would have different/new powers. From Earth, I'd use famous leaders, like Talbot and Joan of Arc for Europe, Oda Nobunaga (Japan) and Cao Cao (China) for Asia.

Cavalry would be more powerful, as they were the 'tanks' of Medieval lands.

No base building, bases would be prebuilt with anything needed.

Large amount of resources at the beginning of a battle, resource gathering would be limited.

As a counter to that, unit buildtimes and cost would reflect their skill and equipment.

Terrain would provide more bonuses.

Basic units would be in hordes (5-10), whereas elites would be single or small (2-4 soldier) hordes.

I'd have a combo horde system, for upto two units in any combo. (2 basic Hordes, 2 elite hordes, 1 elite and 1 basic horde

An uber realistic, third person RPG,where you also have RTS. So you you have like the ROTK game type lay with your heroes, but you can zoom out and command those troops around you. Basically a war simulator.

A very lore accurate game BFME game, kind of like the WoA mod, only the main game instead of a mod.
A changed man is only the same man with a different outlook of life.

Pretty much the virtual embodiment of my 'Cultural Military Analysis', with a few added things - such as an after-game mode where you can view the battle as it happened with a completely mobile camera.

A comprehensive lore-accurate RPG/RTS that starts play with the player as a lesser Maiar when Illuvatar creates the world. You get to chose your path: which of the Valar to serve primarily (Ulmo is amazing) or whether to split with Melkor. You become either a Balrog or other such abomination or you fight Melkor in the War of Wrath. Once completing this campaign, there is a campaign for each race of Middle-Earth, with which ones available depending on how you completed the first campaign.

Are you talking about, when you say

Heroes would be a little more powerful than an equivalent standard unit

that they should be just above a standard unit? That's what I would have wanted in the game besides super units that can be shot like 500 times with arrows and swords. They made the game too 'mythical' with all the magic powers and practicly immortal heroes. Everything should be more millitary than magic, but still have some strange magical phenominon once in awhile. Who was the moron down at EA that decided to make comets rain from the sky...

Not sure about that, puppeteer.

And yes Pas. Aragorn would only be marignally stronger than an elite swordsman, Legolas would only differ from the elite elven archers in his range, and only then after a certain level.

I would argue not marginally per sé. From what I sense of Tolkien, heroes were heroes and though they were no super-humans, they were more likely to survive (at least in LOTR that is, thought the style in The Silmarillion is arguably different). All heroes in LOTR were able to manage feats and few died and even those were after achieving quite a bit. Think of Théoden and his numerous charges, think of Boromir and his stand against the orcs (though I don't think it was quite a feat as portrayed in the movie). Nonetheless I think I've conveyed what needed to be...conveyed.

Well, I suppose my idea's more based in reality. But they wouldn't be super humanly strong, like EA has them. The might have 2-4 times the health of lesser units, but other than that, they'd have no real difference from the units, maybe a range increase for archer heroes or an area-hitting attack for swordsmen and spearmen, etc. etc.

Why not a high dodge percentage? That's what makes them better anyways, their swordmenship, not absurd strength(with a few exceptions.....Boromir, but his is both)
If it's possible, and I'm pretty sure it is. It's been awhile since I've taken a crack at coding anything, though.

It was their swordplay that made them better. That isn't reflected in the game. Really if they did get hit, it would either be a small wound or a totally kill. Real people don't have health bars. It would be hard to do this in game, in any game for that matter. Either no damage, a tiny amount of damage, or a crippling amount. This is what made them heroes.

I'd quite like to see an LotR game where people don't have health bars. I would quite like damage to be realistic. Does anyone remember how, in Starcraft, when your people got injured bits of them got more injured first? Like that, except that it would be serious and not just for effect. If you get shot in the leg, you are injured and probably can't walk. If someone slices your arm off, you're losing a hell of a lot of blood and no longer have your sword/shield. If you get a sword to the face, you're dead. That's that. Earth 2160 was kinda like that, in that once someone got shot, they died, but it was just really annoying because everyone died all the time, all over the place. Also, yeah, the difference between heroes and regular folk would have to be speed, skill and intelligence, not superhuman-ness.

Anyway, I like the idea of 1st person RPG, where you can kill who you want when you want, and you're supposed to keep to the story set out, but you can fuck off and kill everyone and go nuts if you like. I think that would be pretty fun.
I hope I am a good enough writer that some day dwarves kill me and drink my blood for wisdom.
