What happened to global warming?

By Paul Hudson
Climate correspondent, BBC News

This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.

But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.

And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.

So what on Earth is going on?

Climate change sceptics, who passionately and consistently argue that man's influence on our climate is overstated, say they saw it coming.

It has been reported that some victims of rape, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not WAKE UP. In this catatonic state, the victim lived in a world just like their normal one, except they weren't being raped. The only way that they realized they needed to WAKE UP was a note they found in their fantasy world. It would tell them about their condition, and tell them to WAKE UP. Even then, it would often take months until they were ready to discard their fantasy world and PLEASE WAKE UP

Man-made global warming is a myth. People confuse it with pollution and then claim they know what's going on. (Note: I do not claim to fully understand what is going on, but after a bit of research, I have come to my conclusion.) My conclusion is thus: if the Earth is getting warmer, it's not because of us. The global CO2 output of mankind is less than that of cows, and significantly less than that of decaying leaves. (See the other thread on global warming for statistics, I can't remember them now.) We have a negligible effect on global temperature, but we're such an arrogant race we assume everything is about us.

People piss me off. Not individually, just collectively.

Actually, the people who really piss me off are the intellectuals who still insist that everything is focused on humanity when it clearly isn't. We are a cosmic accident, folks. Get over it.

Agreed. Compared to factors outside of humankind, manmade CO2 adds nothing to global warming. Well, almost nothing, I believe the factor was 0.04%.

By the way, I'm not looking for people who agree with me. I'd like some environmentalists or someone who's ideas, hopes and illusions I can ridicule and stomp to the ground. (Denglish, couldn't find the proper expression. But I'm sure you all get my drift :p). More fun that way.

So is this just a reason not to reduce C02 emissions, replace the use of petrol in automobiles, or find alternative energy sources?

No, none of us are saying that. We're just saying that it's a panic with no scientific backing. The fact that we're not contributing to global warming significantly does not mean we should not look for alternative fuel sources or cleaner air. Having tasted Beijing, I have no desire to let that kind of smog spread across the world.

Not really.... This just shows that the 'reasons' for above mentioned aren't valid, and just an excuse of the government to insert the so-called 'climate-taxes'. I'm all for alternative energy sources (nuclear in particular) because oil is, after all, limited, but not because of the global warming bullshit and all that other nonsense the government likes to use to tax the shit out of 'wrong fuel' like petrol.

I'm never one for 'ends justify the means'. Work practices, war, environmental policies... no exceptions. While I think the issue of reducing emissions isn't perhaps so destructive as quasi-scientists preach, I still think we should attempt to cut down. Before it does become an issue. However, from GCSE Geography I can tell you that eleven cars today produce the same amount of carbon dioxide as one car in the 1980s. Good progress :p
Although the plight for renewable energy sources is still/more important than ever. Fossil fuels are running out!

Indeed. More alternative forms of energy would certainly be appreciated. Would be a great job if my country builds one or two nuclear power plants - but the environmentalists don't agree with that. Unsafe et all. Fuck, nuclear energy is probably the most safe form of energy. There's admittedly the problem of the nuclear waste, but you can just dump that in the middle of the Sahara desert and nobody will care.

Nay, the environmentalists prefer the wind mills... Which I absolutely loathe. They ruin the landscape, create almost no energy and cost a hell lot of money to build and maintain.

Anyway, alternative energies or not, it will eventually happen anyway - as more and more fossil fuels get depleted, there remains less and less of them. Basic economic theories suggest that as less and less is available, prices start to rise - and before you know it corporations start investing in alternative energy sources to save money.

Now, who said capitalism doesn't work? :p

Well global warming is a good thing, because it is hopefully making us develope new fuels faster. If it gets proved wrong then we'll just relax and once again believe we have no impact on the Earth, doing whatever the hell we like. Having something, whether true or not, forcing us to better ourselves is only a good thing.

That's why I hope something happens in 2012, because if it doesn't we'll believe ourselves to be invincible.

sssshhhhhh. If people aren't in a panic over it then nothing will be done, so even if you don't believe you should still make others believe. Its like religion, it is a basis for good morals, just cause it isn't real doesn't mean its a bad thing to believe in/act upon. better to have people working to reduce pollution and whatnot cause they believe its causing global warming then to not. Just like its better to have people loving thy neighbor and helping each other because they believe its what god wants then to not.

edit: I found out(a while ago now, so i can't exactly remember all the fine details) about some australian inventor who made an engine that is way more efficient then the engines we have, running on only a fraction of the fuel. However the big petrol companies or whoever it was bought out the engine and are now just letting it collect dust rather then actually using it, because they would lose money should cars be outfitting with this better engine, because less fuel consumption means they don't sell as much fuel and don't make as much money.

Maybe if issues of global warming and stuff become a big enough concern they will release the stuff like this which would be better for the people and the environment and basically everyone except the greedy oil companies.

No one heard of "climategate." Hacker gained entry into UEA and leaked load of emails, some which contained information about scientists fixing warming data. It isn't being reported much by the mainstream media, but no surprise there. There is a lot of controversy and speculation. Some people think the emails are false others say they are just quoted out of context.

I still prefer a conspiracy to get people more environmentally oriented than a conspiracy to get the more friendly to war and the likes

Besides, there is often a reason professional journalists and media don't blow things up on the first page, and that is because they are educated people which know when a source is unreliable at best, laughable at worst. Not everyone can be Fox News

What does Fox news have to do with anything about global cooling? Seemed very random to throw Fox news under the bus at the last second...

That's like saying Santa Claus has to exist, because otherwise children won't behave.

Anyway, I know about climategate, that's what this topic is about after all... The mainstream media don't write about it (scared?), and my government refuses to discuss is because 'the data is stolen'. Fuck, who cares if it's stolen, it's evidence of the biggest hoax since the Catholic church in medieval times. No point in wasting billions of dollars in a climate-treaty in Copenhagen for something that DOESN'T EVEN EXIST, AND IF IT DOES CAN'T BE PREVENTED.

Couldn't have said it better myself Allathar.

And duke, people can still become environmentally aware without being coerced into it by government propaganda.

Well that hasn't been very successful throughout the ages. Either it has to be something so damned good/important that it will sell itself, like bread, alcohol or computers(then again, that computers have gone as far as they have was because of government support, so yeah). If it actually means that we have to cut in our consumption for no apparent reason, you can bet your ass 99.9% of the population would say FUCK YOU and run off to panic-buy toilet paper and chocolate.

Government propaganda is good to get the stupid part of the population moving in the right direction. And if there is one thing we should know there are plenty of, its stupid stubborn people.

What does Fox news have to do with anything about global cooling? Seemed very random to throw Fox news under the bus at the last second...

They were the easiest target to aim for. I doubt that they believe in global warming. I bet they are not afraid to bring people with dubious backgrounds and opinions on the show. I believe they don't care too much if the research is spurious, as long as it makes for good television. Probably not the only media channel to do that though, but it is the one that I felt was closest to my target

*bump* ... couldn't resist this one. Australia apparently has a 'Climate Change Minister' campaigning for a 'Carbon Tax' - clip from a propaganda information meeting at Sidney University:

The response from the audience is quite convincing.
