...I don't know but I think I recall him playing a minor role towards the beginning, I may be wrong.
Edit: Oh wait, duh, it's been a while, but don't the Istari attack the Necromancer (a.k.a. Sauron) in the southern part of Mirkwood?

Radagast played no role in the Hobbit. Heck I dont even think he is in the White Council! (read FOTR during the Council in Gandalfs story... dont have it with me right now, but the way Saruman thinks of Radagast, there is no way that he could be in the Council).

Awesome news, i have to say i'm happy and relieved that PJ is directing now
To be honest, i'd be suprised if there was a big "attack Dol Guldur" scene in the film, as that wasn't really relevant to the Quest of Erebor, and would be a strange second climax to throw in near the end of the movie. I hope they don't do anything silly like replace Beorn with Radagast..
I think Martin Freeman would be interesting as Bilbo. And i'm very curious to who they'll choose for the other characters such as Thorin, Bard or Thranduil.. Anyone have any actors they'd like to see in the Hobbit?

Well, he may not have played a role, but the attack on Dol Guldur (Is that what it was called?...) definitely took place. And I was under the impression that all the Istari were there.
...This was the reason why Gandalf wasn't with the troupe when they made their way through Mirkwood (When he left them and wouldn't explain why).
But I agree with _Haldir_, it would be a strange second climax... Unless it will be the climax of the first film, and The Battle of Five Armies is the climax of the second.
...I know they originally planned to make the first film detail all of the events of the Hobbit, and the second, bridge the gap between that and the LOTR trilogy, but that plan was scrapped and now they're breaking The Hobbit up into two parts... so no, there isn't "a lot of options avaliable for the second movie".

I really DO hope that they dont replace Beorn or someone with Radagast. Yeah he is cool and all, but really? I hope they make him look like what Tolkien described him to be. Or a Games Workshop representation. Or even the LOTR CG Radagast (I think)

Not that it was serious rudeness, just someAnyways, for the climax.. Well, I think the Battle of the Five Armies should be the second one's climax, given it's a big battle, and I think that the ending of the first one should be with a close-up of Bilbo's face, looking at Lake Town, with a new shot with the city, a really beautiful one. So the climax would probably be if they manage to escape from Mirkwood.. think that's a suiting end for the first one acctually, and I'll be surprised if it won't be that way.

The Blue Wizards (who vanished soon after their arrival and were never seen again) definitely weren't part of The White Council. Radagast may have been there, as he did help out Gandalf every now and then, and was searched for (but not found), for the Council of Elrond. Most of the time though, it seems like he was too interested in birds and nature to worry about the fight against Sauron.
Gandalf left because he was a key member of the White Council, and was the one who was urging an attack the most. Saruman only consented to keep his cover, and to prevent Sauron from searching the Gladden Fields. Galadriel was there, and i'm guessing other important elves like Elrond, Cirdan, Celeborn and Glorfindel were too.

I think that was just a rumour, just like the "plans" to make the first film the events of the Hobbit, and the second film the events leading up to the Hobbit, as described in the Unfinished Tales.
I think it'd make sense if they split it how Lauri described. They'd have to flesh out the second part of the book quite a lot though, so they probably will add in the whole White Council/DolGuldur/deeper subplot.

Ya kno they might just do that...A man that turns into a bear-like creature at night would be kinda hard to explain in the Tolkein universe without wasted movie time.I hope they don't do anything silly like replace Beorn with Radagast..
