Yes, I have the latest release in the Sonic franchise. I haven't played a new Sonic game since the early 1990s when STH2 was new. You can tell how long I've been outside of the Sonic loop. Anyway, I bought Sonic Colors for the DS since I wanted it to be portable. Popped it in when I got home from the store and played it for about a good hour. The game is quite stunning for what little I played. The controls are fluid and easy to understand and use. Nothing feels stiff or rigid and the speed is always a nice touch.
The levels play like your usual StH 2D platformer. Lots of speeding around, bouncing off platforms and attacking enemies here and there. Rather enjoy how the levels are split into two types - stages and missions. Stages are what you would expect. Missions though... are a bit different. They're essentially timed challenges and I found the few I played to be very challenging, which is nice since most games I've played lately are way too damn easy. The stage selection screen is reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country, which I like since it's easy to navigate and understand.
Not sure about music since I had to keep the game quiet. Other people were around you see.
So far, really enjoying the game. If you have a DS (or Wii), enjoy Sonic or need a good platformer, grab this game. It's worth the dough... it really is.

Frankly, I'm just glad somebody made another 2D game. The simple games are the most addictive and the ones we remember most fondly.
I hope I am a good enough writer that some day dwarves kill me and drink my blood for wisdom.

Sonic 4 was pretty true to the "original trilogy". It was unfortunately very short, and it's obvious the developers pretty much ran out of time and had to throw it out the door in that state.
Sonic Rush remains the best Sonic game in existence - and yes, it's 2d. The sequel has some annoyances (they changed the trick noise to this ridiculously loud one that ruins the game experience D: ), but it's still pretty good.
Still need to pick up Colours for the Wii.
For the record, Sonic: Unleashed is also pretty good, if you can deal with the Werehog sections, just don't expect anything from it other than an average platformer in that respect.
