OK, so now it looks like instead of bots making accounts we're getting bots making threads as guests. Which is slightly less annoying, but still rather defeats the point of this whole shebang with the upgrade an' all. I mentioned this in the upgrade thread in the RCC, but nobody's said anything yet. I've now deleted five spam topics from guests, and I assume other people have zapped a few as well. What can we do about this?

Easy, disable guest posting.

Or maybe install a CAPTCHA.

We already have a CAPTCHA, reCAPTCHA actually. It still doesn't stop the bots. Unfortunately the custom Question & Answer Challenge we use to prevent bots from registering is not available for the guest posting screen (missing feature obviously).

I've disabled creation of new topics by guests for now. If they start spamming in existing topics, we'll simply disable guest posting once and for all.

Is there not a test we can implant into the posting process that would stop them? If nulling guest posting won't stop them, then go back a step further I say and set up a test for everyone who enters the site to verify they are human. I dunno what is and isn't possible with this new update, but I'm sure we can make something unorthodox their programing won't recognize.

Not every bot is a bot in my experience, a lot of cheap labor being used to log in and spam people on other sites. But humans are not as numerous as computer bots so it shouldn't be a big problem.

Bots are still registering accounts here and using them to create new topics.

We need a system to distuinguish this forum from other IPB3 forums, otherwise bots will continue to haunt us.

That's quite impossible. You can go check, we have a Question & Answer Challenge in place for new registrations. That already distinguishes us from every other forum out there. If someone registered a new spam account after the upgrade, he's human.

Can't we just add that they need one post in some sort of "hello world" subforum, describe whatever forum they are going for and just get on with it. If this is bots then that should somewhat reduce their abilities. If it is some english-speaking slave then it's another situation.

I think you guys are all confusing some things here. Most of these issues are void with the upgrade.
Right now:
- No bot can register a new account (due to the Q & A Challenge, check the registration screen to see for yourselves)
- Guests cannot start new topics

That leaves only the case of "guest bots" replying with spam in already existing topics. If that becomes a real issue, which doesn't seem to be the case yet, we will disable guest posting entirely.
After that the only way to spam will be for a human (or as duke put it, "english-speaking slave") to create an account and go on a spamming spree. But those few we can ban within a matter of seconds.

The one problem we still have are the bots that signed up before we disabled registrations on the old forum software. I've axed a good number of those accounts (about 600-700) by deleting all members whose Project field was set to "google" (Pasidon excluded, although it almost happened). I estimate there might be up to 1000 more of them, but most should never post anything because the posting form changed with the upgrade. I doubt the bots will be able to handle that.
