A straight percentage of planets seems like it's gameable--if you hold the galactic population centers, that ought to count more than a few Outer Rim sandpiles. Can you base it on total pop limit instead of systems?

Not with standard victory conditions, no.

Actually, there are 73.6 standard weeks in a standard year, so Week 936 is something like 29.7 GRS (5.5 BBY). Still, your point is valid (and I'm glad you raised it): research is too quick. A few people complained about it being too slow a while back and I probably shouldn't have listened to them. The tech tree should not be completed in the course of an average game; certainly not all the upgrades either. Expect cost/time increases.

Why?
I like having "maxed-out" ships/vehicles, as well as completely upgraded heroes, especially when I play the GFFA campaign.

I also like having them all upgraded. But in the average game, when you can win in 30-40 weeks (less than a year!) one should not be capable of researching ALL upgrads for 20+ ships :thumbsupcool:

GFFA is a special case, but still, the game should last at least a few years (150+ weeks) to research "everything".

So I vote to make research slower on higher level of things and more pricely. The more advanced level of thing, the longer and costly it should be.

That would work, smashed. Much of the historicals focus on specific planets though, so I'd want something a bit different for the gameplay set. Hate to make everything about Coruscant.

Why? It's not historically accurate. Improvements take a lot of time.

A lot of the time we have little to no info on the details of upgrades. (Just look at the Y-Wing in canon vs the mod.) So it fits the 'what if' nature of PR, I think.

Plus that runs the risk of making higher tech level ships not worth the effort. IMO, early teching should be viable, and not be pushed to the side.

As for the X, Y, Z planet thing, perhaps just identify canonically important planets and PR useful planets? You don't hear much about Rendili and Rothana, but they're awesomely powerful.

<DevXen> Today I was at the store and saw a Darth Vader action figure that said "Choking Hazard." It was great.

Sure. But from the other side: I mostly do NOT build ships before upgrades ... because it's better wait for some better stuff. Waiting time is so ... short.

I think that that's more the AI being unable to be a credible threat to the player. There's little reason to build weaker ships now as opposed to stronger ones later because there's little pressure to do so. Making research longer and more expensive won't change that, as time isn't the problem.

I'm actually hoping reintroduction of galactic population limits forces the AI to spend less on spam and more on better forces.

Well, the Y-wing line specifically is a mess. Same for Z-95. They'll be sorted out for v1.3.

Ultimately, that's the flaw of upgrades.
