Thank you guys, old and new =) Glad you approve. And I think this was just about the best compliment I've ever gotten :p...

That is a marvelous design for a great character portrayed by a brilliant actor in a wonderful movie

...as that was the intention - to capture the strong character of Gimli, portrayed by a great actor.

And yes DarkLord, I get it now, lol. And I sincerely agree. Some of the dwarves in the Hobbit, especially Kili doesn't fully carry the proper dwarvish look.

Here's a comparison shot between all my currently made dwarven models.

Glad you like it, but I'm curious about what you mean... This is a much older model, and IMO the best orc model I've made. Anything wrong with the texture? :smile2ap:

I, personally, think Gimli better primarily because I find evil easier to replicate. As in, not to say that recreating Bolg as exactly as you have is any small feat, but that creating characters that look good and 'full' without having scarring and 'evilness' I find a lot more difficult to do.

Ah yes, that's true. It's easier to mimic something that is not real, like an orc, in comparison to a human or in this case a specific actor and character.

Dark Lord, yeah I agree. The waist of the Erebor soldier could be wider. Also, the arms could use a little more bulk. I'll fix that =)

RoR, I don't know yet. We'll see. But indeed, the light in WB is not like the light in zBrush, so I have started to add more shading to my models, in the texture, and I will roll back and add more where it's needed. Azog being one example.

Wokring on the cape now. I'll be back with more screens of Gimli when the helmet is taking shape...

And half way into Gimli's cape. He sure does look better with it I think...

Very nice details on the shoulders. But I think the skirt pattern could use a little more sharpening to match the quality detail of the shoulders?

Yeah Bolg looks fine close-up but if veiwed from afar does not look that great (well this applies to any general model) but I think Gimli looks a lot more natural and colors not so washed. This might be cause of the Zbrush lightning but even so, it does look better.

Gimli_Head3.jpg

Btw, this weekend, I will test my mod at a collegues place, on a brand new super computer with 4 GHz i7 CPU, 16 Gb RAM and a GeForce 980 Titanium. I will stress the game as much as I can with loads of units and see how far I can push it with my high poly models. It will be interesting (and scary) to see where severe lagg kicks in and how much it differs from my little laptop. My hopes are that the hardware will help, a lot. My fear is, that it won't. Here, I can build about a dussin hordes of my Moria Orcs before I start to notice a drop in frame rates.

What the hell is a 980 titanium? Do you mean a GTX 980ti?

Been gone for "a while", again... What happened? Life.

But as usual, I'll never leave this project, permanently.

What the hell is a 980 titanium? Do you mean a GTX 980ti?

Yeah, not that hard to guess, huh  :trickydick: Ti stands for Titanium.

If anyone's still interested (besides all the "oh this won't work in game" reminders), here's Gimli's helmet, finally.

Glad you like it buddy. Nice to see you again btw  :smilehuh:

Here he is, with all meshes (helmet, head, body & cape) combined, in hd. Going low poly next. Then - crossing my fingers - I'll still have Valheru around for the rigging.

UGnUI0q.jpg

Just one problem.. I absolutely hate doing hard surface stuff, like dwarven axes, and Gimli has a ton of them. So not sure how to go about that. In fear of motivation struggles, I think I'm gonna have to buy those models online, unless someone in these forums wouldn't mind making them for SEE, or donating already made ones. In return, I could donate the Iron Hills axe I made for the IH soldiers. Or perhaps the axe or hammer I made for Dain.

I tried to create an axe, the smallest one of course. =p The four? axes that Gimli uses would be a lot more work.

I know how to bake using Blender Cycles, so once you've created a low-poly model I'd love to try and create a detailed texture with the shading of the high-poly model. It works for creating normal maps too.

I'm sure you already know, but don't even bother trying to use ZBrush for that haha. Max will do the trick pretty nicely, and they're incredibly simplistic in design which lends itself to low-poly structures.
