I don't think it can go in the direction of HBO's Game of Thrones popularity (unless the British/Aussies/Kiwis like it). However I thought this was an audacious move. For the movies, the Hobbit series is weak and tedious and the original LOTR series was at its best.

Good news: Lord of the Rings would make for great television.

Bad News: Amazon doesn't make great television.

So far, Amazon has only made one good show, and that's Other Space.  They cancelled it.  Man in the High Castle is their only popular show and it isn't even good.  How can you possibly make a show about Nazi Germany taking over the world uninteresting?  Observe and learn from the masters of multitasking poorly.

And why wouldn't it be more popular than Game of Thrones?  Lord of the Rings in general as a book series is by default more popular than George R. Martian's garbage.

Apparently it'll be set between The Hobbit and LotR.

Which is a great idea, because TV writers are absolutely great at filling gaps left by authors.

They should just make a LotR TV show so they won't have to make so much shit up and inevitably fall short of Tolkien's setting.

Yeah, no. I was hoping they'd go and put their own spin on the story, but sliding it in between the two triologies... I suspect it will limit the entertainment value because they have to try and keep it somewhat related to the mood and themes of Jackson's films. Then again, I could be wrong. I'll look forward to seeing trailers giving us a taste.

Oh, they'll put their own spin on it alright.  A timeless tale turned into a platform to advance some sort of typical millennial agenda in order to appeal to sexuality and family values in a fantasy setting.  I can already smell the stench of mediocrity from this project and they haven't even started filming yet.

I hope it's about Sauron and Aragorn's dad being friends as children.

I was going to say Netflix should have made the deal.

Yea, Netflix would have been a much better platform for it.  I actually can't think of a worse network than Amazon.  Even Sy-Fy (or however they spell their own stupid name anymore) would have been more appealing.

Wow. Two years later, still in pre-production and season one isn't there until around 2021, but I can't believe Amazon is already lifting that series up for a second season. But rumors suggested that money used in this series might be more valuable than one typical season of Game of Thrones?

About four years later, filming has been wrapped and post-production of the first season starts, with a release date over one year from now: https://variety.com/...date-1235032768
