It goes directly to the update screen and downloads 3 times, and gives the error, and shuts down by itself.

Sounds like a mess.

If you have a good connection: Remove Steam (read my Steam Help) and start again from scratch.

If you have a poor connection: Don't know.

My adelphia is probably fine. Windows 2000- I know, iv heard that before, but that doesn't excuse steam from blocking me out of cs from this last update. My antivirus, same deal, shouldn't have anything to do with it. I did something interesting tho. I went into control panel and ran a repair on steam, and i got a few messages. 1 asking me if i would like to replace counter-strike.gcf with the older file. And another one asking if i would like to replace clientregistry.blob with the older file. I went ahead and replaced them, seeing as the dates on the newer files were the same date as the release of the update. It went on repairing, then i get another message, asking me to find the installation path of firearms28.exe. I run firearms under 3rd party games in steam. And a few things didn't seem right about that. 1st, when it was repairing, it gave me that message under sierra\firearms, NOT sierra\steamapps\email\halflife\firearms. 2nd, it wouldn't let me continue repairing with the listed path it gave me, which was sierra\firearms28.exe. When i hit cancel, it stopped repairing. What should I do, should I go ahead and delete firearms from email\halflife?

Possable problems are:
Adelphia cable - no idea what this is.
Windows 2000 - built for business networks, so n00bs try to use it for games -_-
Norton Antivirus - There was talk on the officail forum of Steam not liking Norton.

Ok, well, im not that much of a whiz, and my comp was built from parts.

32mb radeon (old school)
Adelphia cable
Windows 2000
I think i have a 932mhz
I run norton antivirus always.

Thats all i'm really sure of. What I don't get is, I only got this problem with this update, and none of the past.

Good for you.
I proberly wont help you because: A) This is not the Steam support fourm. B) You did not read the part which said

When requesting help in the Steam forums remeber to post your connection type, install type/file, router, firmwire, firewall, cpu, gfx card and your problem.

How do you think i can help you if you dont even post any info. You did not even ask a question, you just stated a fact.

Come on people :(

A bit more help that could be useful to steam users. If you go to play hl/cs/dod/tfc ect and get no servers at all, Do the following:

1) Exit Steam

2) Go to: <SteamDIR>\config

3) Backup Masterserver.vcf and ServerBrowser.vdf

4) Delete both files

5) Start steam again (may update when you startup again)

If you still dont get servers, backup then delete: <SteamDIR>\ClientRegistry.blob and reupdate

If this STILL doesnt work, shoot yourself or reinstall steam

OK, please can you tell me what a games converter is, where i get it and how to use it as i want to get steam but have a 56k modem. 2 ppl put steam onto disks for me but both times it said 'An I/o error occurred while installing a file' (C:\..Steam\SteamApps\half-life.gcf). It worked for both my m8s (thy have XP) but not for me, I have ME. Thanks

* Have Half-Life (and any mods you want) installed.
* Download the 15mb Ricorche version of Steam (its the smallest that works).
* Install everything as normal and make/use an account.
* Run a normal game of Half-Life from the games menu.
* It will convert your original installed version to Steam.
