Question:
How many people here are looking for employment in the games industry?

Why:
The people who made the popular Desert Combat has been offred some small jobs with the creators of Battlefield 1942. This makes me ponder the question.
I'm thinking of setting up some sort of online CV for anyone who would like there work shown to the world. Theres also thoughts of a Trauma style studio.
Feel free to post any ideas you have that the collective power of Origin can achive.
If your intrested in any of these ideas please tell me what you think, so i can develop them better.

Naturally, and it's something I'm working towards, especially with a Computer Engineering degree from Delft uni over here expecting to be complete in about four years time, amongst what I'll have as a rather large selection of projects bunged into my portfolio.
It's a tough industry to crack, but hopefully I'll find myself able to get into some aspect of a development team on either a major or minor scale.
I've already a heavy opinion on what good gaming is that is continuing to prove useful as the development of my personal projects commences.
I've still got an incredibly heavily developed FPS concept tucked away that never came to fruition as a mod due to the rather extreme labour requirements.
Perhaps when I finally finish my studies, I'll unleash it on a few game software development companies / corporations. We shall see

I'll be a game maker, I suppose. As long as I get into CG I should be fine. I'd do special effects for movies, game graphics, full CG movies, wahtever. I also do alright with Photoshop, for anyone who might have seen my wallpapers.

I know 100% that I want my career to do something with computers and games.

I might become a Graphic Artist or a computer programmer.

You're all so idealistic.

I'd only do it if I could make upwards of $175,000 doing it, and since a "lowly" graphics artist wouldn't make that much, its not for me.

Much as I like games, that's not where I'm headed. I'm going into to PC maintenance and web design. More demand.... hehehe

I want to either get into the gaming industry, become a graphic artist, or animator. I'd be satisfied with any of those.

So it's up there.. but I am too young to worry about it.

I'm probably going into game design. I'm interested in programming or game design, something like that.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

175K? Are you nuts? Noone in the graphics industry earns that much unless they own a sizeable chunk of the graphics industry lol.
I'm more expecting to work on a 40-50k a year if ever to get into any form of decent game software related job. But that's only after being in the industry for a while. Early jobs are likely to be low paid as only 10/15K annual - just enough to live off
Heck, I'm not really in it for the money, I just enjoy it.

That's my point, I won't be able to make that much, so I wouldn't do it.

*Converts $175,000 to GBP*
£93,984  Aiming a bit high ain't we?

I'd be happy with a £12k job at the moment. Enough for a flat, food and the travel costs.

actually, i have many options I wish to pursue... mostly infront of a comp, although if I had to I could do construction like my dad use to (they pay like $25 - $30 an hour). I should prolly learn as much about webdesign as possible, as that is where the money is going, to web designers and programmers, and face it... I'm not much of a programmer, although I'm trying to learn c++ (and next year visualBasic). I may take an extra webdesign course in the tech center next to my school before my school starts... although I reckon it will be really easy until the second year (I'll see if I can get bumped up).

As for graphics artist, I did a report for that in careers... and I must say it would be a nice area for me to work in, except that I have no ability to skin what so ever.... but 175k a year isn't going to happen unless you are freelanced about 5 companies at the same time for the whole year  The greats make about $70,000 a year. So what I would prolly do is have like a part time graphics artist job, and a full timem job elsewhere, so I can pick up the extra cash for gaming...

I'm aiming for around 100k for sometime soon after college. I'm one of those people that has huge plans and such. If I can get into game design, I want to spend a few years learning, and then try to launch my own studio to do games.

You say "game design", but i've not seen you do anything like that. Do you mean "game programming"?

Yeah right :)
Right now I'm working as a salesman, but what I really want is to be able to develop games, but I don't know c++ so its a problem.. I'm good at learning stuff though, so I plan to take some college points and learn c++.. I'll see what happens.. Its always easier to get into the game business if you've been coding for a few years though.

Webdesign is another proffesion I would like to work with, I'm pretty good at PHP and I'm learning more and more the more things I try to do.. I'll see where my destiny takes me :p
