Seems you need a college degree to play it. Just finished that tutorial. Seems structured but clumsy. I'm sure time will tell. I do like the logic of how fleets moves between systems. No lag so far. Alot of micro involved here though.

It takes some time to get used to the system, but once you get the hang of it it works ok imo. I suggest beginning with the Empire campaign as I've found it much easier than the Rebels' one.

I agree with Blaat. But the one thing that makes me not like EAW is that the land battles are confusing. Unlike many other games, you really cant understand whats happening during the battle. You build your troops and tell them to attack, and thats it. Not much strategy. I also dont like the default camera angle, its too much from above. But it is a really well designed game.

I'm not keen on the reinforcement point thing. Yeah it does add something, but it's kind of a pity I can't use my massive armies to overrule the AI ^_^. Which I like to do in RTS games ^_^.

I can't say I'm a great fan of the reinforcement points either. I find it frustrating building things only to find I don't have enough points to actually deploy something. It seems counter-intuative that you build something, but it doesn't actually appear on the map until you call it in. I guess it stops people just turtling but I just find it frustrating that it's difficult to get any backup, and when you do, it only arrives at certain spots on the map.

I think Empire at War is a good game, but I wouldn't exactly say it's something special. It can be fun, but it's not really a game that I find myself wanting to play day after day.

There's actually little games I'd play day after day a lot of hours, but that's probably me. After a few hours I usually have to go to do something else, play another game or something different like talking to people or read something.

But yeah, that can be frustrating. It's nice though that you can immediately put a ship there once one has died. Though of course it'd be more efficient if you could put all of the ships there at once. The graphics are very good though, and the cinematic view can be nice to watch now and then.

I haven't tried skirmish out yet. Must work differently as you can't build up an army as such, but before trying that out I'll finish the Empire campaign first ^_^.

Hostile, do let us know further opinions when you have them, if you want ^_^.

I play that a couple of hours at most, then I quit again to do something else for a moment. I rarely play longer than say 4 hours after each other. I don't know why, my mind just feels like doing something else then, another game, reading a book, IMing with people, foruming.. Then after some time I go back to the game. With RTS games it happens more easily as after one or two missions it can get a bit repetitive so I take a pause, do something else, then when I get back playing it's more interesting again. With good RPGs it happens less as there isn't a definite end. The same goes for some FPS's though they get faster repetitive and contain usually less of an engrossing story than RPG's. [/not totally on topic explanation]

It took me 7 tries to capture the X-wings on the FIRST step of the campaign. Now 4 battles into the first space battle trying to capture the shuttles.

First of all, do I simply just use Y-wings to diasable them and the transport picks them up on thier own? I guess it doesn't really say.

The space battles are a mess and confusion. Trying to find my Y-wings are like quick click on something and hopes its them. And I'm like where the fuck are my units.

I can only use the visual icon to determine which unit is which, and whatever mess shows up on the bottom so I can click on them then. The tutorial may have breezed past how I click on all types of the same unit at once, but it's just clumsy.

While I am but a simple player, it appears you need a college class in "how to play EaW." Shit this complicated really isn't that much fun. I basically just click, click, and point and hope the hell something goes right.

Playing space battles are a mess. Simply a mess. Like a bunch of small things moving all over the place and no one knows what's going on.

I think I may have wasted $50 here. I'll keep playing and see though first. First impression. It's too confusing. Not to my taste... I'm happy when I get back to the galactic map where I can be more in control of things.

If you double click on a unit, all the units of that type will be selected. I group them in numbers as well so I can find them back (with control 1 etc, as many other RTS games have).

The X-wing capture mission I didn't find too easy either. Took me quite some tries as well. I think I quit two missions after that one or something, then somewhat later I tried the Empire campaign instead of the Rebel one. It's much easier for some reason ;). If you find getting stuck a bit on the Rebel campaign (like me), do try the Empire one out, I find it to be a great help and it made me see better how the system works. Seemed less complicated than when I was playing the Rebel campaign. I've not tried the Rebel campaign again yet, am going to finish the Empire one first (3/4th of the Galaxy is mine :p), then try out the Rebel one again.

You can customize your shortcuts, which is one of the things that I absolutely love about EAW. I agree completely about the battles, as they are just confusing and a big mess.

Assuming you are in single player, you can also pause the battle to issue orders.

How do you win the second rebel mission. I have to save these transports. I've just been trying to use the y-wings to disable them but then they start flying again and I lose.

What am I actually supposed to do?

Hmm according to my savegames the second mission was something else but a later one was with the transports. I had the same problem the first time I tried that mission. You have to use the Ion Cannon from the Y-wing's then go to the transports with the Sundered Heart. Let the Sundered Heart fly to them before the 'Ion Cannon' effect wears off and they can fly again.

I don't know what other strategy games you guys play... but it feels almost like a mix between ground control II (reinforcement points), Dawn of War(resource gathering), and Battle for middle earth(building and defense placement), As far as ground combat is concerned. I havn't played space combat yet, but I imagine it will be somewhat like Conquest:frontier wars....

I hated the first bit of story mode... but once you get your capital ships in space, it's pretty fun.

I think the reinforcement points are very good, not just to limit the number of units on the map at the same time but for tactical purposes, making the capture of reinforcement points vital. But they are not uniformly well placed on the different planet maps, i have to add. Other than that, it makes most battles tense, since a much greater number of units does not automatically lead to victory. A single hero shouldn't count as a 'unit' though.
Graphics are also very satisfying.
The big gripe: Galactic movement is not turn based but real time. To compensate, it should have a very simple slider to adjust speed from very, very slow to fast. Right now you can't plot a course if you stop the time, which makes strategic movement a hectic switching contest.
If the interface wasn't so slow in reacting on rather clunky (big, old shool square buttons), i'd give the game a high rating.

I have a theory with Empire at War's Campaign (and some other games). Games campaigns are created and tested before they create patches. Once the patch is introduced, it changes the way the game is played. Therefore campaigns are harder than they should be. I passed the Empire at War campaign with the patch, but some levels were really hard.

All I can say is I had a lot of trouble in the beginning. Once I figured my way around it the game was very easy. Remeber to use the Y-Wings ion cannons if you don't have the game's autofire. Failing that, change the difficutlyadjustments.XML's "easy" setting to make it even easier.

The game is really good but get's dreadfully boring if you change the XML's, which makes it much more fun!
