i really thing that the imperial guard is over powered adn that the tau is seriously underpowered!
maybe its my style of gaming, but i really think so!!!

the tau chew through guardsmen like peanuts 
with the guard you can just throw units at the enemy and eventually they'll break through, where as the tau, you've got to use a bit more cunning than that

I thought the Tau had way too much difficulty stopping the IG tanks; they don't seem to get much anti-armour capability early on.

You are indeed correct! The balance is perfection in itself, and I was foolish to make a mild suggestion that it may have in it a minor imperfection somewhere. Apologies to all.
But really, the funny flying suited things are way too expensive and poorly armoured to compete against the IG tanks. I didn't do the whole turrents thing because I tend to be aggressive and like ot have a mobile defense
