Those of you who are using Google Code repository for your projects might have taken notice of this rather lame news  :whathuh:
http://google-openso...oogle-code.html

The question now is, to where should one migrate? SEE is currently using more than 1 Gb of storage, which is more than most online repositories allow. So where does one find a stable good service with unlimited storage space, that is free?  :whatoa:

Thanks, they seem to have a 2 Gb limit though:

Well, you implied you weren't using much more than 1GB at the moment, so it'd be a temporary solution at least.

Hehe well... the truth is it's over 4 Gb, but we'll fix that before release. There's too much assets and high res textures that will be scaled down for that.

These might work though. Seems to be SVN support, free and unlimited space afaik:

Yeah you could try Sourceforge, but SVN is definitely on the way out as a versioning system. Nowadays projects use git or Mercurial (hg) for which you can get hosting at GitHub (git only) or BitBucket (git and hg).

For your huge assets you could use Google Drive or Microsoft's OneDrive (as they have higher limits than Dropbox) because they are not really suited for versioning systems.

What's better with Mercurial? I would rather not change SVN too as I'm so accustom to using it with Tortoise SVN client =/

EDIT: Sorry for being lazy, I'm googling it now. Seems like part of the 4 Gb issue is the SVN method.

I'd strongly suggest git. It's superior to SVN in almost every way, is what most projects now use and there's TortoiseGit, a copy of TortoiseSVN for git. Git takes a little getting used to, but you can even import your whole history from SVN if you wish.

This is a good introduction:

Thanks bud. I read some comments about people thinking that the UI for Git is complicated and not as smooth as SVN, but if Tortoise supports it, I guess it can't be that bad.

Well, with TortoiseGit the UI is basically the same as in TortoiseSVN, but that won't save you from spending an hour or two to grasp the differences. The video is a really good start though.

Yeah, it's just that they only spoort 1 Gb of storage and SEE is much larger.

I guess that's intentional. Repositories are meant for code and core assets, not every PSD ever created. You can just back those up and share them elsewhere if needed.

Sounds a bit trixy... but that's for the suggestions =) I'll go with SVN for now, until I have to migrate (again) :p

Just saying, Google Code's made migration to GitHub really easy, and I've so far found GitHub to be sooo much smoother than SVN. Quite a nice, clean interface, and it's hard to mess up. I recommend it as an alternative, but then I've only that and TortoiseSVN to compare.

Yeah, it all sounds good but SEE is still too large for their 1 Gb limit  :whatoa:

I agree with Naz on this we need to host the entire mod. We just have too much we are working on simultaneously. Especially when we add assets that are for game play and mapping

I'm not sure how much force is behind a polite email. =p Better be safe than sorry.

I already tried that, and got this  :themenace:

Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting in touch! At this time, we don't support repos much larger than 1GB. This limit is in place to ensure that GitHub continues to operate smoothly for all users.

Supporting large repos is definitely a problem we're interested in solving, however we're not quite there yet.

I'm really sorry for the inconvenience.

Cheers,
Jamie

GitHub has been fantastic at developing new features and fixing bugs. Let's hope that they eventually find a way to increase the limit. =D

...

We might need 10GBs by then. Essentially making a new game. =p
