Hey,

https://pcpartpicker...e5/saved/FxG6Mp

That is the part list I have his goal is to have the best 3k gaming computer.

His requirements are:

2 980s

Future proof by using ddr4 etc

--

That said this build is over 3k. i put in the beast psu for insane future proof options as well as cable management. He doesnt want 3 monitors but he does want 2 cards which doesnt make sense to me and i tried to talk him outta it but he says he wants it. anyways!

How can i improve this build? if he doesnt get a solid build just under 3k he says he is buying a 3k laptop and obviously a desktop is better performance wise.

So I post a topic about a build a few hours ago, and this topic pops up about a "friend" you want to build a computer for.  Well... it's a bit early for my birthday... but I'll pretend like I'm surprised when this "friend" of yours gets this "surprise."

If they are going to do SLI cards on air cooling, use ones with reference style blower coolers. The directional airflow pushing the air out the rear of the case will yield better temperatures with cards in such close proximity, and also make the ambient temperature of the case lower. Lower temps = higher overclock = better performance than using the "premium" cards like a Strix.

He wont be overclocking I can promise you that. Plus he has a huge color coordination thing.

Any other suggestions?

Not really easy to make suggestions on a build of such caliber because it always comes down to personal preference once hitting this sort of price range.

But, if I had to come up with something it would be to use a different case. Even though I myself use the 750D, it's not a very good performer when it comes to air cooling, it's a case that is much better suited for water cooling, in my opinion.

Interesting, what would be a good case for something like this? He wants a sleek looking case but doesnt want to pay the premium.

I would say probably either this Phanteks case, or this Fractal Design case

Ahh ive got 2 980 poseidons(asus) on the asus rog gaming LCD-gsync. Truly incredible.

NZXT great cases, and Fractal

He doesnt need to get a Strix, no point paying for Asus unless its required. I bought Poseidons because their water cooling funtionality is top notch for overclocking. Strix is just a fancy 980 with the same performance as any other. EVGA and such are way cheaper and usually factory overclocked aswell

Also that monitor is garbage. You dont need 2 980s to play at 1080p, geez. If I were him id ditch the X99 mobo chipset, get a 4770k and DDR3, a good gaming mobo like asus or MSI, and invest a lot of the money in the monitor. The first question u need to ask when building a new system is-do you want to game at 4k? Personally I think its not developed enough yet, you cant get 144hz 4k monitors.

He needs to get an asus rog swift, expensive as fuck, or one of the new gsync/freesync ones.

Even a single 980 is overkill for 1080p fyi. 1080p is stoneage. 2560x1440p+gsync is currently the best option. 4k is still in its early days, needs better monitor support yet

FYI last I checked 4k monitors are not yet over 60HZ refersh rate. That means you also cant game above 60 FPS = garbage.

I cant express how good gsync is, you dont really know how good it is til you try it and then try gaming without it. Freesync is just AMD Radeons version of it

Do not get a ROG Swift. If you're considering an expensive 1440p G-sync display get the new Acer badass. It's got all the goodies that the swift does, except one BIG difference and one small difference. The big difference being this Acer screen is IPS yet still 144hz and G-sync! The small difference being that it's 4ms as oppose to the 1ms. Which is not something any sane person would notice unless they are doing highly competitive gaming perhaps, and even then it's something where you would have to actually suck to be blaming your poor performance on 3 measly millisecond difference.

Another thing to note though, there is a 4k G-sync monitor. Although yes it is still 60hz, the added G-sync will make the performance still buttery smooth. Especially since you would need like, two Titan X cards to even think about pushing FPS upwards of 100 on 4k anyway, so the point is moot. And look! This 4k monitor is actually cheaper than the 1440p/144hz sister screen.

I agree on the Strix though. The MSI or Gigabyte cards are better for price/performance. The performance being basically the exact same (or better in some cases), as the Strix.

I've been through this, don't worry no matter how much you spend, it's impossible to build a future proof PC. There is no "future proof" PC to build.

The DDR4 Memory and the requiring X99 Chipset are simply extra cost, unless you/your friend have a very good reason for that, it's extra money for gaming/GFX and Music workstations etc.

Seems awfully heavy handed for a build if there's no real reason for it. I have an H97 build with an i7 and a solo GTX980. That alone will power me through the next several years without any problems whatsoever. There's no point to DDR4 or an X99 build right now. The benefits will be very minimal at best. Once DDR4 becomes the standard, upgrade but until then, get bang for your buck...

Yah the new haswell cpu prices are retarded.

Since the 980 Ti just came out and is only slightly under the Titan X for performance, grabbing a z97 chipset + 2 980 Ti's will dominate 4k gaming

As above tho the whole build depends on what resolution ur gunna game at.

If your in scum 1080p then one 980 is fine. If you want to keep up with the amazing 1440p and 4k monitors you need 2 980's or greater.

Jaw dropping games are always coming out and theyll stress the fuck out of ur system even if u have current best hardware.

A good example is running The Witcher 3 at 4k and all Ultra settings- one 980 wont cope at all, even 2 980ti's get smashed. 41.7 average FPS on 4k ultra in SLI, u need 60 ideally

make sure u read single mode gpu and then SLI

4k gaming = expensive as fuck

Good luck building a "future proof PC" with VR knocking on the door.
