both actually, but too new for max 8 I think. Tried a few exports in Max 15(aswell as the stand-alone one) as .3ds and its fuking awsm, very smooth. You can adjust from 0-100% reduction

My models are about 8 000 000 (million) polys, so... When I topologize (alter to low res) I get down to about 5000 polys, for heroes.

I have used an older version of polygon cruncher in Max 8. It worked, but admittedly the model I was trying to "crunch" didn't turn out to be easy to rig still even being much lower poly count. Granted I was considerably less knowledgeable/skilled at the time so I expect it would be easy to do now.

The grey sphere, down in the left corner of the start menu. I make the head first, then I make the body, the same way and weapons and gear too. One sphere per object. There are many methods though. zSphere is popular, but I never use it for these models.
