My mate recently installed Battle For Middle Earth II, however he cannot host or join games.

He has no Firewall. He has turned them off momentarily.

FirewallBehavior = 1
FirewallNeedToRefresh = FALSE
FirewallPortAllocationDelta = 0
FirewallPortOverride = 16000

(This has been done).

GameSpyIPAddress = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - Line has been removed also.

We haven't tried Port Forwarding as he is rather illiterate with computers so we refreshed the NAT. Nothing happened.

(His computer is from 2002 and his Modem/Router is a dinosaur). He never gets more than 4 bars of connection. It's usually sitting on two or three. He is wireless.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance!

He cannot use FirewallPortOverride = 16000 without also forwarding the port in his router. This line (same as just entering the static port in the game's network settings) instructs the game to only ever use port 16000. If the port isn't open => no connection possible.

If your mate can't enable port forwarding, tell him to delete all four FirewallXXX lines in his Options.ini.

Ah, I see.

However, we switched to Game Ranger and it works. Some times everything stops for about five seconds and resumes (like it's paused). Other times, it works fine. Got a clue why everything would stop for a couple of seconds and resume like nothing happened? It sort of freezes, but we can still type to each other while it happens.

That happens on the T3A:Online server or on GameRanger?

Game Ranger. We can't get T3A to work - his end.

I can only guess that this is because GameRanger has to set up a sort of VPN between the players, causing latency problems.

Are you sure you can't get your mate to enable port forwarding and use T3A:Online? You might have better luck with it because with T3A:Online the game uses your regular Internet connection without any overhead.

GameRanger is a VPN service. It's essentially the same as Hamachi, the only difference is it will launch the client and automatically set you in the correct place. But it connects people to games though a VLAN configuration.

That's also the reason it's inferior, because it bypasses the normal launch techniques, therefor rendering custom content unusable.

Port forwarding is too complicated for him.  I could tell him - through instructions, but he could mess something up which might generate errors or making him have no internet access at all. If we did do Port Forwarding (which we might) what else could we do if it does not solve the problem?

As I mentioned before, but i would like to mention again:

His computer is from 2002.

He recently formatted it.

His modem/router would not be above the year 2006.

He runs the wireless internet with ADSL. (He never gets five bars of signal strength).

Would this make a huge difference?
