They figured out that they could keep raising the price, and people would still buy them. Nintendo did the same thing with carriage games back in the 90's, and they discovered people were dumb enough to pay 60 bucks for games. The legend continues.

That and the miniatures have a lower quality than LEGO.
Not for all the models - Warhammer get some really good casts, but the new Hobbit ones are absolutely abysmally designed. If I were to get any new model from the Hobbit range, I'd only have Smaug as an option, simply because he's one of very few non-rushed looking models.

The plastic and precision molding are inferior to LEGO. =p
Not a fair comparison:
* GW uses plastic/resin/metal that is for painting
* GW creates sculpts with more detail
Smaug was delayed for so long because either WETA or Warner Bros weren't impressed with something about Smaug. I don't know if they had to make an entirely new model?

Sigmar's beard... LEGOs also aren't highly detailed molds of giant space tanks.

Nevertheless!
I have the most beautiful Moria goblins that I commissioned from The Dead Marshes, a British miniature painter. If I was to start a proper army I would want to (I can't) commission someone to paint it for me. Regardless of budget, painting yourself an army is unrealistic and I see too many bad paint jobs on great sculpts, or an army of entirely grey warriors.
I'm going to see how damaged my miniatures are and if they are worth photographing.

Which is why we need LEGO Warhammer 40000K. =p
I cannot stress enough why this idea repulses me.

And besides, aren't you an artist yourself MtL? I'd feel rather like I was playing with someone else's army if I didn't paint it myself.

I'm an artist, and a big reason for why I've never bothered to ever pick this sort of thing up is that I want to play with a good-looking army that I don't have the patience to paint myself.

To be fair, I hate painting armies, which is why I like Tyranids: lot of monsters, so there's lots of variation in painting.
