Cant connect to other players

Best Answer Dimitery, 29 March 2016 - 04:02 AM

Well it seems a new modem/router has solved my issue, not only that I dont have the "losing con every 5 mins" issue. Just so you know my previous modem/router that gave me nothing but trouble was a Netgear CG3000 and the new one is a Netgear CG3000 2.0. Also, before I installed the new one I tried putting my modem/router into bridge mode and using another router, this fixed the issue as well. So the problem was in fact with my old modem/router.

Hi. Yesterday for some strange reason my internet connection started to play up (was dropping out for no reason), and today upon attempting to play C&C (both TW and KW) it seems I cant connect to anyone at all. I rang my ISP and they said that there didn't seem to be anything wrong from their end so perhaps the problem lies on my computer/router. Any help would be appreciated.

If this is suddenly happening, it's more likely that your ISP changed something. You could try unplugging your router or resetting it to factory defaults. If that doesn't help, contact your ISP again.

Ok, I'll try resetting my router and contacting my ISP and letting them know in more detail what's happened.

An automatic Windows update might be the culprit. If there has been a recent update, you could try rolling back your system to before that using System Restore.

Otherwise, you could try switching off Windows Firewall temporarily to see if that helps.

If you are able to set up port forwarding, forward all of the range for UDP to your computer's IP address on the network; UDP Ports: 8088-65535. You will probably have to find the IP address of your computer on the network (if your router can't do that). To do that, open a DOS prompt (cmd.exe from the Run menu on the task bar) and type IPCONFIG. That should show the IP address of your network adaptor. Forward to that. You might want to set that IP address as static (so it does not keep changing). For help doing that, look at Red Alert 3 Connectivity Guide the "Configuration", "Static IP" section (that section applies equally to this- not the other parts).

Tox, what is the rationale for forwarding 8088-65535?
This GR port forwarding guide looks horribly overdone to me. You also definitely don't need to forward TCP ports.

I said UDP only :p

Kane's Wrath can and will use anything in that range as its listening port for P2P; see Command & Conquer Series Online Ports.

Turning off windows firewall doesnt seem to have had any effect, also for some strange reason when I enter a port forward rule for (UDP 8088-65535), they dont open. My router is a NETGEAR CG3000

What do you mean, they don't open? They won't open (as such) unless the game is running and opens them.

Something else I noticed when testing my con on Gameranger is that before this issue when I would join a room, a small window would pop up saying that I had a "Cone NAT router" or something like that but now it says I have a "Symetric NAT router" and that it is unlikely I will connect to other players. hmm.

For some strange reason C&C seems to be the only thing effected by my internet playing up last night. hmm.

The guide says otherwise and should probably be updated. Forwarding TCP ports does nothing at best and breaks things at worst.

Kane's Wrath can and will use anything in that range as its listening port for P2P; see Command & Conquer Series Online Ports.

We should probably back this up with some actual testing to find out which range is used most often. I have the feeling the source port used is mostly in the 6000s.

Port forwarding a range so large is likely to cause all kinds of problems (if the router isn't smart enough not to use these ports for remapping other computers in the network).

If you really have a symmetric NAT it will be very, very unlikely you'll be able to play with other people. Then you really have to port forward the whole range ToxicShock told you. Be aware that this may break your Internet connection for other devices using this router.

Call your ISP? Get your router replaced? We're running out of options here...
