So act 2 campaign won't be finished with the next 3.3 release?

Howdy

Was excited to see yesterday that MO v3.3 was announced but I noticed that it was written that the next release will have 60+ missions with additional ones to come in the future when they are finished.

So does it mean that with the next release we won't have 72 missions with complete act 1 and 2 campaigns + a Foehn campaign and that we will have to wait for additional patches in the future that will add the rest of the missions?

Basically yes. The number of 72 missions is no longer binding though as unlike Act One, Act Two won't have a set-in-stone amount of 36 missions. Eventually there'll most likely be more than that.

It'll be more similar to how Twisted Insurrection does it.

Nice to hear that we won't have to wait until S\L is added into Ares and until all the missions are completed, both are time-consuming and would delay the release for quite a while. TI-like release system will also allow to gather feedback and make adjustments based on it more efficiently, I like it. There's one question however. It's been said there will be a client from Rampastring, does it mean the ingame menus will be replaced with this external program entirely (like it happened with TI where you won't find the old TS match setup menu anymore), or it will work only with multiplayer and everything else will still use standard RA2 windows? I got used to classic interface, besides, I'm worried about XP compatibility of newer Rampastring clients and the fact that its GUI strings in most cases can't be changed (unlike RA2 where everything is in .csf file), so any translation will be incomplete if the client doesn't have a string file and replaces half of the game interface.

The old menus will become obsolete indeed and there will be a translation problem for a while.

As for XP compatibility, I'm sorry, but even AlexB has been considering to drop XP support for Ares at certain point and I suggested to delay that back then.
However, if they feel the absolute need to do that eventually there won't be much I'll be able to do. New MO heavily relies on what recent Ares releases had to offer.

For now it doesn't seem to be a priority so I'd expect the next MO release to work with XP. We'll see.

I guess the GUI strings being editablle or not depends entierely of Rampastring and whether he sees the point of doing so or not. I asked him the same thing about TI (I have it translated too, just never released the translation because it is incomplete) and DTA clients, and that's what he said:

http://www.moddb.com...age-version-115

However, I won't put the UI strings into an INI file, since I don't think we'd have much to gain from a translation / we at DTA don't have the staff that'd be able to translate the game to many languages.

But since your view on translation is different (you said you want MO to be translated into different languages), he might change his mind and make things abit different for MO client. After all there ARE some editable GUI strings in TI match setup menu, so I guess it is not impossible to make them editable nor it requires to sacrifice some functionality in return.

As for XP support, it is really sad, because there are people who still use it not because they are conservative, but because their machines can't work under newer OS or work slower under them, so XP is the only choice (well, there's also Linux, but that's entirely different story). Sometimes it is not possible to upgrade, plus, even 2000-2005 era PCs still can be used for both work and playing, even if the new games can't be played on these PCs. But TS/RA2/Generals aren't new games either.

I'm actually relieved that the old menus will become obsolete (for the campaign and everything as well, I hope), because they were highly unstable on newer Windows versions, while Twisted Insurrection for one still works like charm.
