I have an idea since my vote is with Generals Zero Hour as it was my biggest thing with modding when I was young, the engine is unfortunately quite buggy (online mismatches) and the error reporting isn't that good, don't get me wrong I like RA2 as much, but ZH is on a more modern code, it should be easier to have higher goals.
A website called "Project Rocket Buggy" could be set up petitioning EA for a C&C Generals Zero Hour remake, with some initial information about the cause.
Since I have been thinking about this for some time, I already had an similar idea, i'll just include those bits here.
- Vulkan or DX12 API for lag free 8 player battles (since it's a remake, a retro game, vulkan is obviously the pick for making OS support wider)
- Skirmish AI improvements (difficulty, tactics) and optimizations to remove LAG !!! (Biggest annoyance in ZH)
- Modern Screen Resolution Support, proper ingame camera height optimization for each resolution
- Modern OpenAL audio backend.
- Audio Quality Improvements (Usually games use toned down files from master, they need to find their studio master files in archives and convert with better quality settings)
- Button Decals should be left the same unless they are as good or better and don't ruin the original look and feel.
- Textures should only be reworked if they are true to the original and are simply higher resolution without ruining the original feel. (or higher quality used from master if it exists)
- Option to make tech buildings auto-reconstruct after some time after they have been destroyed.
- AI's should not try to destroy tech buildings agressively but try to capture them (priority), should set teams to guard them actually, if a team is attacking it should stop if infantry is in active capture process.
- and teams that aren't really meant to go defend into that area shouldn't all start attacking the tech building as some high priority target (the stupid "attack entity closest to base" ai logic)
- Balancing base defences (laser lol)
For the textures, making like 5 drafts and letting the community to decide could be a golden thing not tried as much in gaming, the only issue is that the non-core mainstream majority players have to be filtered out of outvoting a minority core, the people who didn't play original Gen and then ZH back in those days shouldn't have the same power behind their vote what's best for a remake. I played it almost every day after school at friends house, a year on Gen, and like 3 on ZH, then I finally got my own PC.
Many people may not recognize the significance because it's almost like music, when it's good it's just not noticable that it is good because it makes the game better and doesn't annoy you, audio experts know this that if they get no talk about audio, they did their job good, that's same thing as praise, if people talk about audio all day long it's probably a bad sign because if they talk about audio it's usually something annoying, so, what I'm talking about is the button images, you don't see people talking about them all the time, but if they get changes, I certainly won't be quiet, other people will try to make themselfs like the game but the feeling wouldn't be the same, they're very iconic, changing those would make the game lose it's soul, infact I'm hostile to this, I will not play nor will enorse such a remake that is not going to respect these key areas.
