Westworld is a new HBO series (based on the original Westworld) about a futuristic cybernetics lab that designs an interactive park themed around the Wild West.  It's a narrative on the repetition of our perspective of the American west, as the park cycles through the same scenarios endlessly to entertain guests.  It even has the great philosopher, Anthony Hopkins, in the works.  Fantastic concept with a deep connection to the ethics of cybernetics and a very unique take of uncanny valley.  On the verge to becoming one of my favorite shows.

I wonder why it's on HBO. HBO has never set on a sci-fi series before.

It's not really focused on the science, though.  The show is firmly interested in the drama while the theme of science fiction is mostly a part of the background.  It's more like Jurassic Park than Stargate, with Anthony Hopkins playing the equivalent of John Hammond.

This is the scene I keep coming back to from the first episode.

That was one of the finest moments in acting I've ever seen.  Amazing scene.

Also, if you're watching Westworld and you listen carefully, you might just notice a few familiar modern tunes with a western twist.  This one was a nice surprise:

Paint it black, black hole sun, and blackbird, I've read people have heard in the first episode.

Also like that the blonde bandit Armitage is a Norwegian from my parts of the country. She played in that hercules movie with the rock as well, so Hollywood has designated her the action girl.

The 2nd episode is just another seven-league step into this show becoming the next big thing.  It's just incredible.  No wonder HBO is starting to release the episodes early and showing them off for free on their site... they should be very proud that they picked this show up.  A strong contender for my favorite series of all time.  I'll decide that if this first season concludes just as strongly as it opened.

I kinda felt that the first episode had a different feeling to it than the second, which I suspect is because of the pilot nature of it. It's not bad, the man in black is consistent at least, I'm just wondering if they realized after the pilot was done that they needed to rewrite a few of the longer plot lines, and it's showing through here and there.

Still, great mood, second episode didn't have the same high-level moments like the Abernathy interrogation in the first episode, but that might come as time goes.

I dunno what show you were watching, but it carried over every bit of what it promised in the pilot and more.  It can't throw in such revenges and terrors of the Earth immediately.  I quite liked it showing us through the park through the perspective of that greasy guy.  It's building suspense in all the right ways.

I didn't like the show when I first started seeing it. It kinda look like Dollhouse meets The Island. Artificial Hosts created by humans, only to be set in a Western society of the desert called Westworld. So much for language, violence and brief nudity. The conflict in the series: the main enemy is a Deus Ex Machina.

Well, good.  But it's nothing like The Island, and it only shares the uncanny valley theme with Dollhouse.  The thing about Westworld, as a theme park, is that Anthony Hopkin's character created it as a magical place for people of a futuristic society to explore a fully immersive world in a much simpler time.  But because of the nature of mankind, people are solely using it as a shooting range and brothel.  They don't care about the stories, like the one-eyed guy who roped you along on a treasure hunt if you helped him up from the mud,  Dollhouse was all about creating anthropomorphic automatons for drug running, crime rings and brothels.  The show was very blunt on the concept of uncanny valley, not really building any intriguing personalities in either the players or machines, which is likely why it was underwhelming and cancelled.  Westworld is barely comparable to Dollhouse in that sense.

I really enjoyed this season, but I "H" "I" "DOUBLE T" HATED how they handled leaps forward and backwards through time.  Actually, they didn't handle that at all.  I spent most of the season confused to how much time was passing between scenes / episodes, and wondered if these different story lines are coherent together at all.  The finale was fantastic and really did explain most of that frustration, but it annoys me that I had to wait for ten episodes to understand that it actually wasn't plausibly coherent because they took the timeline and jumbled it up in a big tin can.  Though, very interested in seeing how they handle the next season.  Hopefully those two comic relief technicians are gone since they constantly annoyed me.

I'm a bit sad I got spoilered early on on this theory of it being set at multiple points in time, as I feel I'd have gotten a hell of a kick out of it if I didn't know it beforehand. Still, the show is absolutely worth the watch for the stellar acting and the ballsy gambit they took in actually playing with time and age in the story. Really looking forward to the next season and I love Nolan's rationale that it wouldn't be any fun to keep the park running as usual for multiple seasons, and that there should be a massive change between each one.

Looking forward to see if Ed Harris + others is still with us and how the hosts manage their new narrative. Also love that the coolest & final scenes of the final episode was given to a Norwegian actress, so that's also fun :p

I wonder if Westworld is the next best show after the end of Game of Thrones. Now season 2 is here, I wonder what's in store. So far, the plots are confusing, more confusing (and rather complex) than any recent TV show I have watched so far.

Edit: Just watched the first episode. After season 1, looks like the AIs (I mean hosts) are taking control of Westworld (park and main facilities) and the new guys with guns coming into the land are probably going to control the park and exterminate them all.

You need to learn the difference between "best" and "popular."  I'll give the new season a look at here soon.  Without Anthony Hopkins, I dunno how interesting it'll be.

Just watched the first episode of Westworld season 3, not bad for a futuristic cyberpunk experience.
