I'm posting this here because this is the most active bfme2 website that I've found, and I was hoping you guys could help me out.

So a few months ago I decided I wanted to play around with the game a bit, so I started editing the INI.BIG file. It was fun, however I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game a literal 30 times and it won't reinstall the original. It keeps installing the changes. I've installed it from the disc AND from the downloaded iso from this site. I have gone through every folder I could fine with BFME2 or Electronic Arts and deleted it. However, it keeps reinstalling it like that. I was hoping someone knew how to fix this?

Thanks for any assistance you could provide.

It's strange if you re-installed the game, but can you list the files that you see in your %appdata%/roaming/My Battle for Middle-earth II Files/ directory?

Also, the shortcut you launch the game with, rightclick it and select properties. Then have a look what's written under 'Target' and copy it here.

I've gone in through safe mode and deleted EVERY file I could find (after uninstalling it through programs and features). I'm reinstalling it again to see if maybe this time it worked. Also went through Regedit and couldn't find any registry files for it.

Target:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Battle for Middle-earth ™ II\lotrbfme2.exe"

Just did another fresh install and it still has the effects of the INI file I edited. WTF. game2.dat was modified the moment I installed it but all the other folders weren't, so maybe that has something to do with it??

When I fresh Installed I believe it was just the options.ini file. Also I reinstalled/uninstalled 3 more times and again have had no luck. Never mind about game2.dat I don't think it's the issue because i installed the game the exact same way on my other pc and it installed it correctly, so it works fine on that one just not my main. Same options.ini file I believe to.

There's really something wrong here. You can let the system search for remaining *.ini, *.big files. There has to be a solution to this.

I will try doing that again when I get home. I've searched through the registry using regedit, and no luck finding a singular file from the game. I think a windows reinstall is the only way to fix it, which quite frankly I don't think I"m going to do. I should also see if it's fucking up on my other computer (I have 3, I installed the mods on 2, so I will check when I get home if it is broken on the other pc). I will do that and post the results.

No, no. You definitely don't need to wipe out your harddisk/operating system!

If you are really desperate you can:

Uninstall the game, delete the appdata\roaming\bfme2 directory with all its files and check if there are any remaining shortcuts that have a '-mod' paramerter, as well as checking for leftover .big/.ini etc files.

But before doing that simply check where the modified files are. They have to be present, there is no other way.

This sounds so incredibly strange that I have to ask a potentially insulting question:

Are you sure you're not just launching the vanilla game and confusing a vanilla feature with a modded one? What exactly is different about your version?

Are you sure you're not running RotWK? You may be reinstalling the game and launching a different, modded install on a different drive (if you've ever made one). Whatever it is, the notion of modding the game and making a clean, actual reinstall and then getting your modded files reinstalled from the disc is impossible - so I think there's a point of confusion somewhere.

Oh I have deleted every file imaginable for the game (including registry keys, but I didn't find any, and yes even my appdata folder). As for modding things... let's start with goblin warriors taking no cp and costing 5 gold, building in 5 seconds, but only having 5 health and doing 5 damage. To be fair, it's not quite as op as it sounds.... but it was mostly for lols anyway. So now I just reinstall and I immediately load into a skirmish match and test that out. Also I did a lot of modding to the game, so balance imo was increased (believe it or not goblin spamming as much fun it was kinda sucked cuz power points).

Edit: It should be impossible. Somehow it is though. I have absolutely no clue. I'll take screenshots and post them of my installation process etc. And try and post them.

UPDATE: So I might have just figured it out. The program i use to edit the .big files is a program called FinalBIG. I made some modifications for balance to my modded version, and I just uninstalled/reinstalled the game and it kept those changes. I'm going to delete that and post back my results to see if that's the issue.

Edit: Didn't fix a thing. Still have no clue as to what the heck is happening.

This is an interesting issue.

Have you checked your reinstalled, and what should be the original, .big file for the changes you've mentioned?

I have because I made backups before editing and it doesn't fix anything.

Show us screenshots 'in detailed view' of all the files in your installation directory, with exact file size.

YES! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THIS FILE EXISTED!

So basically deleting this fixed all of my issues. Now that I know this I'll actually be able to revert to the original game :D

I used to have the same problem. It took me ages to figure this out when I was first modding BFME 2. Oddly this stuff seems to overwrite anything in the regular BFME directory and if you're editing/saving a big file in your main BFME 2 directory, it will always create an instance of that save file in Virtual Store. Glad I could help. :good:

Man, and here I was thinking the old BFME poltergeist had made a triumphant return.
