Hi there,

I'm trying to play Contra 009 BETA on my newer PC, I can't get it to run at all. I have the Origin version installed there, and as faith decided I am missing one Zero Hour CD otherwise I would've used that the original CD's.

It keeps giving me an error that I mustn't be already have generals.exe running or close open .big files.

I've been scouring the internet for hours but I can't find the fixed launchers because Bibber's website is offline. I did found fixed launchers on ModDB but it doesn't come with an install.exe. It's just one generals.exe file I don't know where to put. There are three generals.exe files for Origin; one in the main Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour folder, one in the Zero Hour subfolder and one in the Generals subfolder.

I also added the extra install_final file. I also tried renaming the appropriate .ctr files to .big (which annoyingly renames itself back to .ctr after failed launch).

Could someone help me out? Or perhaps send me the fixed launchers? I think there might be the problem.

Thanks & Regards

Hey there,

thank you for that link!

I didn't know Archive also stored such files.

Anyway one step further but have not been able to launch it without the error yet. Or those two errors actually.

The first says "If you have one or more .big files opened, close them and try again. You also can't launch Contra if generals.exe is already running."

Second one "Could not launch Contra."

Any ideas?

Hello Rudi5,

when you installed the fixed launchers, you can do the manual install:

Make sure you put the folders in the right map. Sometimes the names of the maps are very similar.

Manual installation instructions for those having problems with launcher:
I want to emphasize that for these steps you MUST NOT use the Contra Launcher. Many people don't read carefully and fail to install the mod.
1. Put all files from Contra009Beta into your Zero Hour folder (NOT the one in My Documents).
2. Rename !Contra009Beta.ctr to !Contra009Beta.big.
3. Rename !Contra009BetaEN.ctr to !Contra009BetaEN.big OR rename !Contra009BetaRU.ctr to !Contra009BetaRU.big if you want Russian language.
4. Rename !Contra009BetaVOrig.ctr to !Contra009BetaVOrig.big OR rename !Contra009BetaVLoc.ctr to !Contra009BetaVLoc.big if you want English unit voices.
5. Rename !Contra009BetaMNew.ctr to !Contra009BetaMNew.big OR rename !Contra009BetaMStandard.ctr to !Contra009BetaMStandard.big if you want vanilla soundtracks.
6. Rename Scripts folder to Scripts1 (which is located inside Data folder).
7. Start the game from generals.exe (NOT Contra Launcher.exe)!

Also, if you did the manual installation, you can open origin as usual, and start Zero Hour from there. Then contra should be loading after a while. If you do that, ignore step 7 of the manual instructions. This way you do not even need the contra launcher.

I hope this helped.

Thanks!!

I got it to run now. Thanks again, I followed the instructions you last posted, the manual installation.

I'm sorry to hear you had issues with the launcher. I've fixed some errors preventing the launcher from doing its job. I hope it will not cause much problems this time. BETA 2 is coming soon.
