[Red Alert 3][Steam] Unable to launch game with C&C Online hooked

Best Answer ViperMkVII, 28 December 2016 - 01:26 AM

  • Open the C&C:Online launcher, select 'Hook'->'Red Alert 3', then close the launcher. Right-click the title in Steam, and create a desktop shortcut (why's this neccesary?). Double click the shortcut, then... C&C:Online shows up. Nothing else happens. Interestingly, Steam now says I'm playing Red Alert 3, until I close the C&C:Online launcher. Looking at the task manager, I never see the Red Alert 3 process even starting when launching the game hooked.

Hi, this means that you have successfully "hooked" C&C:Online with your Red Alert 3, because now C&C:Online will be launched instead of Red Alert 3.
You just need to click the "Red Alert 3" button inside (the automatically launched) C&C:Online window to launch the game, and you will be able to play online.
I know this hooking method sometimes can cause confusion, we already are working on a better solution ^ ^

Hello!

First, thanks for the awesome tools provided - while it is disgraceful that this is needed in the first place, I'm very happy someone took the time and effort to create this work-around.

Now, the issue at hand: When I try to launch Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 that I bought from steam without hooks or anything, it works flawlessly, except, of course, the missing online multiplayer. Looking at you guides, I tried to do these things:

  • Open the C&C:Online launcher, select 'Launch'->'Red Alert 3' (without hook). This opened the splash screen for a few seconds, then the process shut down for unknown reasons. The game doesn't manage to start properly.

This is on Windows 10 N 64-bit. I've tried setting RA3.exe to compability modes for Vista and XP.

The CNCOnline_Log.txt file is completely empty.

So, now I'm at a roadblock. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

PS: If there's a way to start the RA3 co-op campaign through LAN (without C&C:Online), that would also be a valid solution, for me.

EDIT: I should maybe add that I'm using F-Secure anti-virus. I have tried to do the entire process above with DeepGuard disabled.
