I'm using renx to animate units but when I want to apply a texture it seems like I'm obligated to apply a png texture and put png and tga in the big file :/

You can apply a tga texture and if you're concerned about file size you can have dds textures in your mod folder itself. As long as the dds file has the exact same name as the tga you applied to the model the game will read it just fine. The game treats dds and tga as the same, you just can't apply a dds to the model in RenX.

So apply tga, then convert to dds. Or just keep it as tga, and it will work fine.
