Me and my friend just got this game because of the steam sale but I'm struggling when it comes to making a server for me and him to play on. Can anyone help me out?

If you just need to know how to make a custom match and use the game controls in game, can I ask you to make a topic in the General Discussion forum, as this forum is reserved for dealing with technical errors. You are sure to find someone to help you in there.
