So I am thinking about learning how to do animation this summer. Since I am doing this, I wonder if I can somehow contribute to the Mental Omega mod by making animation cutscenes that Speeder and the team can put into the mod itself?

Animation is one thing, having models to animate is another.

I'm guessing I'll have to create my own models then right?

Animation isn't just about models.  When you mention animated cut-scenes, 2D traditional style scenes in a hand-drawn fashion (or at least looking hand-drawn) should be the first thing that comes to mind.  Since Mental Omega is seemingly inspired by Japanese animation, and you're directly inspired by Mental Omega, wouldn't you want to learn an animation style closer to that anyway?  No grantee that the MO team will take your work and use it, but it would still be neat to see what you can do.

Well, I guessed that he means 3D animation, since that's what RA2 cutscenes used to be.

It's fun to break tradition once in awhile.

I know there are a few people on the forum who can provide you models/ already have 3d modelling experience. I highly suggest you check out the fan art thread to recruit. If you are to accomplish something on par with the classic cut scenes, you will need all the help you can get.

Also, I am making no promises, but just to help you get started, I believe I can pitch in on the modelling department over the summer.

Take your time.

You can try something closer to the C&C franchise, as the C&C community (should) be bigger than that of a mod. I expect there will be more resources as well as some try to create their own AMVs.

Or use something else. More important is to familiarise yourself with the technicalities of the task, and programming yourself to commandeer tools and equipment to get through them.

There is usually a few years difference between learning to do a task, and doing the same task efficiently and with quality. I didn't start making maps / missions in 2012; I was already dabbling in it in other games (RA1, TS, Dune2000) since 2008. And my fan-missions in 2012 were still primitive. :p

Someday I'll make Dynasty Warriors / DOTA / danmaku / racing game a thing in MO. :D

It helps that I have fun doing it. You'd have to have fun to last that long. :p
