Played a couple of games fine with my friend, and suddenly got a game hit with out of sync due to different versions of the game???? And from then on kept getting the same error. Tried again after a few days, and then same thing happened again after a couple of games. We're using steam by the way. Would appreciate any help.

Did you play custom maps? That is a very common cause of DS. If not, reinstalling the game (both of you) might well help.
