I put it in gmax scripts folder, tried to import a w3d model and it says format not supported. Am I missing something basic here?

Are you using the old, old Coolfile w3d importer or the new one we've got on the website? Because the latter probably won't work in RenX and requires 3ds max 8 (which I can send you over PM).
