If I recall, American tanks had better handling and mobility, but it was the shaped armor that helped the survivability of most Russian tanks. Which feature makes for the better tank? I'm sure there's a 10 hour documentary that actually has a staged tank battle to figure that.

@pasidon: i'm pretty sure the T-34/85 would win. i'm sure that the Sherman's gun wouldn't be able to punch through the T-34's armor. Actually, i think that the "Easy Eight" version face the T-34's in Korea, and had a hard time of it.

T-34, Sherman was basically a war crime to send vs Tigers until the firefly appeared but even then the armour probably didnt have any or much of an upgrade did it?

@cuteBUTmad: yeah, a Sherman vs a Tiger was pretty much suicide, unless there were a lot more Sherman. then swarm tactics would take over and eventually they would take the Tiger down. the firefly only gave the Sherman the chance to take down the Tiger, but the armor was never upgraded.

Well apparently running into a Tiger was actually a rare thing in reality, Hollywood just bigs them up alot. Despite that though I dont think anyone could ever feel safe in a Sherman knowing there could always be a Tiger around the corner. And in comparison, Tiger crews for a long period like the U boat crews probably felt untouchable.
The Sherman definetly did something, but most of that can probably be contributed to the massive number produced and they were pretty reliable
I dont know much about Tanks really, but general opinion is the T34 was best. But as usual depends who you ask an American is likely to say the Sherman, a Russian The T34 and a German a Tiger. Well im British and im saying T34
I dont even know what we had, probably Shermans as well and Churchills? No idea lol, I think maybe we had one good heavy tank though
Oh yea just remembered the Sherman did get an unofficial armor upgrade. Which was the crews placing logs and crap on the tank to try and deflect rounds

@cuteBUTmad; I consider myself a tank buff, and most of what ya'll would have had were Shermans and Cromwells. the lack of Tiger s istrue, the real bane of the Shermans existence was the Panzer 5 "panther". The Panther had the firepower of a Tiger, the armor of a T-34, and the speed of a Panzer 3, making it a real threat. Unfortunately for the Germans, they were short on gas. this meant half the time they were more like stationary guns then tanks, since there wasn't enough fuel to go around.
