Edit: as of mid-January 2019: Changes were made to moderation in the Discord, and if things continue this way, my arguments below have been satisfied. If you came here to be informed about what to expect from the community, I would say as of now I do recommend giving the Discord a try. There is drama in the community that causes some problems, but that is separate from "moderation", which I would consider to on an upward trend.

Edit: as of January 2019:

If you are a new user who has come to the forums to learn anything about this system, I highly advise you use other platforms instead, or move on to other games. The community that remains in the SAGE-based C&C games seems to be completely unable to police itself, and a vocal minority seems to have control over any and all discussion.

Hey all, right away going to say that this forum has tons of sub-forums, and I'm not even sure where this is supposed to go, so hopefully you won't mind if I drop it here.

Also, what I'm going to be talking about here is relative to places like the Discord (C&C: Online), and not necessarily within any of the games like C&C O provides support for.

I'm a new user, actually came back to C&C3 from C&C Rivals. I feel like C&C O is well-designed, and it was super quick for me to set up. But like, keeping in mind that C&C 3 as a community is pretty niche, and that it competes with many other newer and more lively RTSes (and their communities), it's my opinion that the community cannot afford to allow much of the behavior that goes unchecked. As a new comer, this toxic behavior is very discouraging, and as I've said to some in Discord, imagine all the players who have come to the community that have just simply left without saying anything like I am. We'll never know what they think, and they won't be around to participate in any "polls" I've heard some of the sub-communities may have had.

I want to come to the Discord to meet up with people to play with who may not already be logged in to the games, but to do that I need to wade through and put up with such incredibly malicious language. It's not smack talk, it's not even just your usual trolling. The things I've been seeing in Discord are perhaps the most vile malicious things I've read in a really long time from random folks in a chat like that.

And imagine my surprise coming to this forum to see right on the front page that a user was banned earlier in the month, being told "too bad" at his request for an unban, and yet here they are, and I've already considered muting them in the Discord. What happened? Are there many other users who have been banned and unbanned many many times? (Also, to this user, I've got nothing against you, I am sorry I have to use you as an example)

On that note, I also want to share my personal opinion that if such bad behavior goes on long enough, at some point moderators have to share some of the responsibility. Some people have DMed me trying to reassure me that there's not that many people who act that way, that it's just so hard to find normal players, etc. But I run my own Discord, I know how this goes; those normal players are there, they just aren't talking because the Discord is a toxic shit hole.

And as an aside, someone had mentioned in Discord that the community is already small ,and I can understand that trying to discourage old regulars from logging in seems like a painful thing to do. But take my word for it, as a new comer, I'm sure I am not the only one scared off by this behavior, and trying to discourage a few people from acting this way will surely net a gain in active users.

Now, this was definitely quite a rant, but I am hoping voices in the community with more experience than I do can share their thoughts, and have an actual discussion about moderation. And judging on some posts on Discord I feel like lots of people really would like that.

So it's been about 12 hours since I posted this thread, and with just over 30 views to the thread, we've had zero replies. This is despite the fact that I continue to receive DMs on Discord from people who have read the thread, and continue to assure me that it's only a list of various names that I need to watch out for. This isn't good enough. I'll help start a discussion, and maybe we as a community can agree on some kind of change.

With Whitey's permission, here's his response to the thread:

We don't really care about new people finding this old game anymore

And nobody wants a safe space zone for KW/TW, if you keep trying to ban any banter and make it just "Hey my good friend" the community will die
And just move to another discord or whatever
Have you not seen the hate towards GR because of a couple bans they have?
People in this community would literally create a new server if that shit happened

I disagree; I think that the community absolutely does care about new people finding the game, and I myself am an example of that. Either new players, or people with nostalgia who want to come back. It's really that simple. Though I think Whitey is right, that changing in moderation will have an affect. However, I think it's the community as a whole that benefits. If the players who have a problem being told that their behavior is pushing people away from the group, then I personally guarantee that those players who would leave to make their own group would only allow new people to join C&C O, and more importantly, bring out all of the players who were already there, but were discouraged from using the chat rooms.

And to add a quote from Mathijs on Discord,

You mistake this server for your personal club house. Tartarus is 100% right in his assessment.

The needs of a few old players to flame each other don’t outweigh the need for a more welcoming server.

If you're reading this, can you give your thoughts on this, Mathijs? Coming into this community has been a blur, but I think I was told you had recently returned to being a moderator, or something? What are your feelings about the rules, enforcement, and their consequences? It was you who told the user in the other thread about a wrongful ban to "deal with it." So as a new user who has concerns about moderation, I'd like to ask if you could shed light on what had happened? Maybe not on this one user's particular circumstance, but is there some reason bans do not stick here? Why are users DMing me lists of names of people to watch out for that are all identical?  Toxic, if you've been here longer, is there anything you can add to this?

edit: I also want to add ,as Mathijs reminds me, there are people called "Discord Moderators", but if I may be so blunt, I've seen them do literally nothing in my time here.

So what can be done about it?

I'm new to your community, so I am not going to pretend like I know what your needs are. But I've got my own experience, so please allow me to at least make a suggestion to get the ball rolling.

Before I begin, I need it to be clear that I do not in any way suggest or recommend banning people from C&C Online's service for behavior on Discord or the Forums. These two realms should be separate.

If banning users entirely from the community is not what you want, then what I recommend is removing individuals' ability to post in particular areas, but remain able to read to keep tabs on the community. To do this:

- Right click the name of the group that the chats belong to, "DISCUSSION".
- Click Edit Category, then click the Permission section.

- Click the + icon next to Roles/Members in the top left.

- Here, instead of creating a new role or referencing a role, you can type in an individual's name. Any options you set here for the individual user will become an exception above any of their other role permissions.

- So, if you set "Text Permissions > Send Messages to "No/Red/X" then that user will be able to do everything they normally can, except send messages to all channels in the group.

That's just an example of how Discord gives alternate options. I have a good feeling that this solution is a bit half-baked, so maybe it's not best for this community, but perhaps worth thinking about. Also, if I may add, I don't believe banning from the Forums is ever really necessary. I learned that from an old thread that talks about Predatore's departure. What I found was that it was better to see that no posts or users had been deleted, and everyone was able to show their true honest colors. In fact, what I felt was that the users who have nothing positive to say were better off leaving their comments, as it only served to damage their credibility further to begin with.

So those are my thoughts, I really hope the community can have an actual discussion about this rather than kicking the can down the road ever still. It's painfully obvious to me, and I doubt I'm the only user, new or old, who feels this way but doesn't have the energy to say anything about it.

Edit: Rules have been posted in the C&C Online Discord, in the NEWS > #rules channel.

Welcome to the C&C:Online Community Discord. This Discord is intended for discussion of the games we cover, finding matches, patches, etc.

Below are a number of rules and guidelines that are required for participating in this community.

1. BE RESPECTFUL
- Even if you disagree with someone's ideas, you still need to respect the person behind them.
- If you're receiving abuse through PM, please report it to a Discord Moderator.
- We do not tolerate threats of any kind; threatening another member will result in a permanent ban.

2. NO SPAMMING
- Don't spam emotes, reactions, or tag people excessively.
- Don't advertise other channels/services without express permission from a Discord Moderator.
- If you need support, either ask in the appropriate channel (depending on the game), or visit our Support Forums here:

3. CONTENT
- Keep discussion of specific titles in the appropriate channel.
- Discussion of general subjects happens in #generalchat

Not following the above rules will lead to a verbal warning. Breaking them a second time will lead to a permanent C&C:Online Discord ban.

It's been 4 hours since an argument started in #kaneswrath about whether or not it is right or wrong to call people retarded or autistic. Now the discussion has turned into whether it is correct or not to be transgendered and if animals can consent to sex or not.

Whitey and zTipzee seem to be trolling Shocktapus, but Shocktapus absolutely will not let up in the discussion, and I can only figure that they are also trolling.

At some point around an hour ago, Mathijs did enter the chat:

MathijsToday at 8:03 PM
For fuck’s sake.
I just trawled through this trash heap.
MathijsToday at 8:06 PM
Last warning for the usuals. @onchyonchy I am rebanning you. @Whitey grow up. @zTipzee if you dislike my rules, leave. Anyone I missed: read the #rules

So as far as I could tell, onchyonchy wasn't even present, don't know what that was about. Immediately after Mathijs logged out, the conversation continued to feature something that sounded like "how should I react if I have sex with a woman who turns out to be a man", which is historically something that leads to murder, and whether animals could consent or not.

The moderation in this server is ultimately and completely ineffective, and because of this the chat rooms don't really seem usable for their purpose. In its current state, I cannot recommend Revora as a system, a service, a community, or really anything to bother with.

If you are a new user who has come to the forums to learn anything about this system, I highly advise you use other platforms instead, or move on to other games. The community that remains in the SAGE-based C&C games seems to be completely unable to police itself, and a vocal minority seems to have control over any and all discussion.

Maybe things will change at some point, but my understanding is that this community has been like this for years, and I've already been cautioned by others to stay away, so I'd like to extend that sentiment, as of January 2019.
