Motherf****r.... My enormous excitement just died. The remaster is done in Unity Engine and the FAQ shared over at the official forum single-handedly confirms it:

Updated modern UI and controls
Experience Commandos visuals like never before on Unity Engine with modern controls and UI for the current console and PC generation.

DUDE, WHAT THE F*CK REALLY..... I am not gonna spend a single cent on this. No damn way I will. On top of that neither Steam including SteamDB, confirm the availability of coop. We have that in the original, we had it in 2001, we still do.

Will Commandos 2 HD Remaster include multiplayer?
No, there is no planned multiplayer content.

And we won't get it again.

Massive shame here. Although obvious one with so much platforms announced. Kalypso just unburied the series and buried it once again, even deeper. That proves they're gonna cash on the popularity of the old versions. They can go to hell with that scam..........

I'm mad here, dunno about you guys.

Forgive my ignorance when it comes down to the combination of that game engine with respect to this game, but what's so bad about the Unity Engine in this respect?

No multiplayer planned? That's already bloody put me off from buying it, since thats pretty much all i play in comm2 these days as thats most of the replay value of comm2 for me, if they made a decent multiplayer with no hamachi needed i think the game would be much more popular.. As about the engine I dont care too much, the unity engine is still possible of good games, it's just a lot of noobs with the "my first unity game" crap on steam greenlight who give it a bad name.

My thoughts about the HD announcement:

1) I don't think that the comparison in the video (original vs. HD) is really meaningful.

The screenshots from the original game look super blurry because they were scaled up by almost 200% (probably using cubic interpolation). If you play the actual game on your PC, it will look much sharper.

For comparison I've extracted the background image from the first tutorial mission and scaled it up to 194% of its original size.
Then I used some effects (sharpening, white balance, color correction) and the results looks almost the same as the HD image.

To be fair, I took the screenshots from the YouTube video which is of course compressed. The actual in-game background is probably sharper.

Here are the 3 images (the last one is my creation) so you can see the differences for yourself:

screenshot1.jpg

screenshot2.jpg

screenshot3.jpg

2) Recreated models with more polygons and better qualities: Although I appreciate the effort, I really don't think that it will make much of a difference. After all, you'll probably won't zoom in during the game so you could see the improvements.

And I could easily live without the silly animations of the Sappers' bouncing helmet, that looks very mobile game-ish to me. But tastes are different.

3) Unity Engine: I have no problem with that. They'll use it to render the 3D objects (soldiers, vehicles, special effects), the background images will still be 2D bitmaps. Unity is a powerful cross-platform engine, so it's obvious why they chose it. Porting the original Commandos engine to other platforms would be almost impossible. Let alone the technical limitations (texture size, polygon count etc.)

4) No multiplayer: Punch in the face for many fans. I don't really understand that decision. Especially because they are using the Unity Engine which supports the creation of multiplayer games.

Basically? They added some filters on top of the original textures to make them look sharper (different) and touched on the models (a bit). Most likely the original soundtrack won't be pat of it either due to licensing. In general a mobile clone off of the original. Absurd bs.

Well, that's what we see. What we don't see is what's happening behind the scenes.

They had to create a new Commandos engine from scratch (well, not exactly from scratch, Unity takes care of many things already), but I doubt that they reused any of the existing C2 code. I think that's the most impressing part of the HD remaster. They'll probably create the next part of the series using their new Commandos engine. And if they are clever, they'll add multiplayer support ASAP.

Since I'm not a modder myself, I ask you dear modders, does the transition to Unity make any difference when it comes to modding? Easier? Harder? New possibilities?

Even without multiplayer it looks really good, im excited for playing it with a low end difficulty since never was able to complete commandos 2 myself.

Damn right. Could've done a flexible enough engine of their own, use it both on the remaster and the "new" games, maybe Kalypso could even had their own studio to work exclusively on strategy games, a la Microsoft's new Age of Empires division. That would have won us, both as customers and players.

I think if THQ Nordic had bought the rights, they could've treated the series better, then again it depends where the rights go.

In short no new missions, no total conversion mods like Destination Paris, not even proprietary tools to do those. And Unity is known to be build with no mods in mind. Add the lack of multiplayer and what you get is a slightly better Commandos 2 HD Project in terms of graphics, though bad in other aspects, sold for 25-30 euro.

@Salvador, you never beat C2? Ever? What were you doing then? :D

It depends. If the developers import all resources into Unity, then there won't be an easy way to access or alter the resources. But if they decide to store the resources externally (e.g. saving mission scripts as JSON or XML) and load them at runtime, then it's possible to mod the game. This means that the developers must actively implement the ability to create mods.

Remastering a game into the Unity Engine does come with some sacrifices and it has limitations. Luckily the C&C/RA remastered games aren't even using the Unity Engine after all.

Yes you right with that, but custom missions still possible if they allow it with a custom sdk, also i think this is same engine base used in Shadow Tactics and Destination Paris still running good on C2 original.

I played game but my skills are not good enought to beat it solo.

This picture sums it up really. The visuals look worse than Commandos 3 which was released 16 years ago...

Don't be so pessimistic, it's been 13 years since the last release (not quite successful Strice Force) and 16y. - Real-time tactical version.

The remaster version shown in the screenshots is not the final ... Also, the game engine gives us the ability to modify most of the assets.

The Commandos HQ is getting a new spin on its life path.

P.S.: This year we have two games in this genre: Comm2 HD & Desperados 3.
