Someone asked me if i use Macromedia Dreamweaver to make Origins sites -- I quickly said NO.
You might as well try to use World Builder (game mapping tool) to make your web site with. Thats how bad it is.

I use FrontPage Express (which is different from FrontPage 2000+). It's not newbie friendly. It makes loads of <font> tags for no reason. It's easy to use. It does whats needed: makes table layouts.

Goto http://intgrunits.olivet.edu/other.htm for a nice page with it on, and instructions about installing.

I made my first site (Twisted) with this and i still use it now. It's damn good for an 5 year old tool.

Frontpage that comes with Microsoft Office is evil!

It makes loads of <font> tags for no reason.

Loads is an understatement.

Gonna have to grab myself a copy of this.

Yeah, I just use notepad for everything. Since Detail set up all the tables it isn't too bad. I've only hardcoded a table or two on my site, one for a tutorial, and one for my tutorial index pages.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

You have to setup all that site settings in Dreamweaver. After you have all it does is make tables. Alothough it's evil and put spacers in the tables.

If you know HTML its much easier. Dreamweaver pwns Frontpage :p I've never liked frontpage, its not that user friendly, as you said, and easily buggers up your code.

I just use notepad. I used to use a program called WPC that was really good, but I lost it when we wiped my old PC a couple of years back.

I use HTML-kit which is a very hand program that allows you everything you need from an code editor (except perhaps wysiwyg) and more. It is geared towards html, but you can also use it for php and other programming languages.
It even has built in ftp.

Best of all: it is FREE

I don't know enough HTML to use notepad, so I use frontpage or *gulp* Word - I know I know, I have a patch installed (for word) that really cleans up the code, or if I use frontpage I just brush through with notepad and tidy a bit. Tried out Dreamweaver for a while, once i'd made a test page i couldn't get it to go away.

I was always an avid Frontpage person cause well it's easy. But a webber pro convinced me to give Dreamweaver a try and after some tuts from her showing me how to do the same things I knew so well in Frontage, I have to finlly say Dreamweaver. I use Ultradev cause well databases are essential and that's what it's there for... and also Frontpage makes those FAMOUS Microcrash extensions. Dreamweaver makes generic pages editable by anything.

Yeah, frontpage really sucks from a lot of standpoints... It:

1) Generates waaayy too much [messy] code, CSS and font tags galore

2) Doesn't take into consideration any other browser than IE on Windows

A couple of years ago I went to work for a large company as the lead web designer and we tossed Frontpge the first week. Frontpage is easy for beginners, but Dreaweaver packs a lot of power if you are looking to do Coldfusion, ASP or PHP.

notepad is the only tool you ever need to use...except when making tables, its easier to do that with fp, dreamweaver, wtvr...then just cut/paste/clean-up(if youre usin fp)

Why do you guys think that making tables in a text editor is so difficult?

I tried out HTML-Kit and have used Netscape Composer in the past, but I prefer to do my coding in a text editor called Metapad that has useful features like Find and Replace and Go to Line number X.

Has anyone here tried FirstPage 2000 (www.evrsoft.com). I find it to be quite a powerful editor, with a built in html viewer, you can see what your page looks like as you code it. It also has a syntax highlighter that shades different html tags differently to make it easier to find parts of your code. A table creator, and simple buttons to push to insert tags rather than tediously typing them all out yourself.

If you want/need a good WYSIWYG editor, try Mozilla. Their built-in editor is quite good, and makes table manipulation quite easy. It's also quite free.

I don't know that Mozilla does, and it's a bit difficult because PHP is a server side language. I test on my virtual webserver, but that's only accessible by me...
